Large projects carry a significant level of risk. Adopting new technologies also carries significant risk. Australia’s securities exchange, ASX sought to replace its chess settlement system with a new, blockchain-based system several years ago. The project was never delivered and ASX, itself a listed company, wrote off over $250 million. In an interesting twist, the corporate regulator, ASIC, is now suing ASX for misleading statements in relation to the project. The litigation and the capital expenditure written off - not to mention the significant distraction for the ASX management team over many years, illustrates the cumulative effect of risky and/or failed projects. In 2021 Fabio De Masi wrote on Twitter: If I were a financial advisor, I would advise Northern Data shareholders to invest in tissues. De Masi made a name for himself through his work on the Wirecard scandal in the Bundestag's investigative committee. He issued this warning after, Northern Data, a publicly traded data center operator and Bitcoin miner, kept investors waiting for its 2020 annual report, finally reporting revenues of 16.4 million euros – instead of the projected 120 million! 🗞️ Now the Financial Times reports: „Two former executives of Northern Data, a German-listed crypto and AI infrastructure company backed by Tether, say they were sacked after raising concerns about alleged fraud they claim was being perpetrated by its chief executive and chief operating officer.“ ➡️ This is not a minor issue for the crypto industry: Tether Group, the issuer of the market-leading stablecoin Tether, is a direct shareholder of Northern Data and has provided hundreds of millions of debt financing for Northern Data. ➡️ But, believe it or not, it gets even better: A few days ago it became public that Northern Data AG is speaking with potential advisers about a US initial public offering of its combined artificial intelligence cloud computing and data center businesses - at a valuation of up to 16 billion US-Dollar (16 Milliarden Euro). For context: Current market cap is around 1 billion Euro❗️ As you can imagine, the different news led to wild swings in the stock. After the story of the potential spin-off spread, the stock exploded almost 50%. Then the fraud allegations were made public by the FT and the price almost halved. All within a few days. Next up we have the crazy and always hilarious Paul McCarty. Paul will he presenting "Repo Swatting: How to delete anyone's source code repository anonymously". Paul will discuss a new attack called Repo Swatting identified in major SCM providers including GitHub, GitLab, and Gitea. He identified the attack and theorized that it could be weaponized to take developer resources offline. He was correct. Swatting is a terrible practice as it allows malicious attackers to target unsuspecting, innocent people by using law enforcement as a directed weapon. The Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) $250 Million CHESS blunder is the subject of my latest project failure case study. ASX embarked on an ambitious journey to replace its 25-year-old Clearing House Electronic Subregister System (CHESS) with a state-of-the-art, blockchain-based platform. Despite being heralded as a world-first use of distributed ledger technology (DLT) in a financial market, the ASX's CHESS replacement project encountered numerous challenges. The ripple effects of the failure impacted Australia's financial ecosystem, as trust in ASX's ability to manage critical infrastructure took a significant hit. This case study examines the series of missteps, governance issues, and technological challenges that led to the demise of one of the most ambitious financial infrastructure projects of its time.
