National Healthcare Interoperability Plan - Quarterly Progress Report published The third quarterly progress report on the implementation of the 44 actions identified in the Plan has now been published and is available on the Australian Digital Health Agency website at https://lnkd.in/gQadbvwe . Out of the 44 actions, two are complete, 34 are on track (9 are even ahead of schedule) and 8 actions are yet to commence (in accordance with the schedule). So in summary, the work is tracking well. Well done to everyone across the health sector who is involved in delivering this essential work.

As a healthcare professional, the recent findings from "Australia's AI Imperative" report by John Mangan are impossible to ignore. Australia's narrowing economic base, as evidenced by its declining Economic Complexity Index (ECI), leaves us vulnerable to economic shocks. The Australian Digital Health Agency has launched an ambitious five-year roadmap, developed in partnership with the Department of Health and Aged Care and Services Australia, to significantly increase the adoption of national healthcare identifiers. This strategic plan, spanning from 2023 to 2028, aims to revolutionise health information exchanges throughout Australia by ensuring that healthcare identifiers are universally employed across all digital health projects and platforms. The roadmap delineates a series of targeted actions including legislative reforms, enhancements to services, and technical upgrades, all designed to facilitate seamless integration of healthcare identifiers. These unique numbers are essential for accurately identifying individuals, healthcare professionals, and organisations, thus minimising errors in patient data and eliminating unnecessary repetition of patient histories across the health system. Simon Cleverley, Assistant Secretary of Digital Health at the Department of Health and Aged Care, underscores the benefits: “With wider adoption of healthcare identifiers, Australians will no longer need to repeat their medical histories as they engage with different parts of the health system. My latest article in Partyline - the the online magazine of the National Rural Health Alliance. 'In global terms, Australia boasts a higher per capita count of doctors than many countries, with 37% more than Canada, 29% more than the USA, and 24% more than the UK, as per the World Health Organization. Yet, despite this abundance, health care access remains unevenly spread. Telehealth not only removes the structural limitations imposed by geographical distance to patients, but also offers flexibility to clinicians. Attracting clinicians to live and work in regional locations is a global challenge. With telehealth, clinicians can live where they want and work there’s greatest need. At RFDS Victoria, our clinicians live in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and everywhere in between. It's time to celebrate success! For the last few years, Semantic Consulting has been working on assessing digital health maturity in a range of healthcare sectors: General Practice, Aged Care, Allied Health and Pharmacy. We're working with almost half of the Primary Health Networks (PHNs) and have delivered a large number of important insights into digital health maturity, and the characteristics of health services at different stages of their digital health maturity journeys. We're not just interested in who is using which clinical information systems. That is important to know. But what we're really interested in is how do you get the heart of why digital change in healthcare is hard work. What are the true blockers to digital transformation in healthcare, and does the data align with the common (but anecdotal) narratives that we tell ourselves. How are systems being used? How ready is a health service for digital change? How ready are their patients? What is the level of data and digital literacy? What clinical leadership is in place to support digital change? Today we passed 1,000 survey responses from Australian General Practice. An amazing data set, from which we're looking to publish some of our key findings (in partnership with academia) in the coming months.
