It's been a big week in the technology world, globally and here in Australia. Just some of the highlights below: CrowdStrike caused a global outage for 8.5M users globally. As an apology they sent its partners $10 Uber Eats gift cards for the extra work they did to get everything back up and running. How thoughtful! Wiz rejects Google's $23bn offer to acquire them. Wiz will instead seek to reach $1bn in revenue before selling shares to the public. Three Australian brothers, launch Illuvium.io, a blockchain based game combining role-playing games (RPG), strategy and collectible NFTs (digital assets, or non-fungible tokens), built on the ethereum network. No digital wallet needed, just an email address and password to get started. Melbourne based start up Cuttable, raise $5.5M in investment. Cuttable will combines ads with AI to deliver high-quality digital ads at scale. Well done Edward Ring! Kaliba secure their next employee with some big announcements to come! A concerning story, and not just because of the story itself, but the lack of comment in Australian Media. "“Unprecedented” Google Cloud event wipes out customer account and its backups. UniSuper, a $135 billion pension account, details its cloud compute nightmare." UniSuper is an Australian Super Fund, and so far I have not heard, read or seen anything of it in the Australian media. My summary of the 2024-2025 Australian Federal Budget, specific to investments in technology and cybersecurity: * $196.8 million over 3 years to support the delivery of the 2026 Census, including ensuring safe collection and storage of data * $206.4 million over 4 years to improve data capability and cyber security of regulators like APRA and ASIC, and modernise legacy systems * $78.7 million for ATO to upgrade ICT systems to detect and prevent tax/superannuation fraud in real-time * $39.9 million over 5 years for developing policies and capabilities for safe and responsible adoption of AI technology, including $2.6 million to mitigate national security risks from AI * $12.8 million over 4 years for the Department of Parliamentary Services to enhance IT for productivity and cyber security * Funding to expand the Digital ID system for secure online identity verification * $160.7 million over 4 years to upgrade NDIS IT systems for better security and reduced burden on providers * $227.8 million to upgrade Australia's diplomatic communications infrastructure and cyber resilience * $4.2 million over 4 years to establish a Technology Foreign Interference Taskforce The budget prioritises improving cyber security of regulators, government registers, and critical infrastructure while also investing in emerging technologies like AI and digital identities. The Australian Signals Directorate ACSC Annual Cyber Threat report for FY23-24 is finally here. (link to the report in the comments) While much of the data was probably expected there are some call outs in my first skim of the report that is worth noting. Specifically to #SMB and #MSP organisations. - MSPs were specifically called out this year as a big Supply chain Risk. This was obvious to many and is something I call out in my training as well. This puts a spotlight on MSPs to get it right and to adopt proper #Cybersecurity measures, whether you provide security services or not. - SOHO routers are highlighted again as a big #risk to organisations, in particularly to those providing hybrid #modernwork approaches. Many users of which do not change default settings or enable basic security controls on the routers. While difficult to manage for MSPs, I believe technologies like SASE can help to reduce these risks. - Average losses and number of "reported" incidents for #smallbusiness is up from previous FY. Notably, Average loss is down for Medium business. I wonder if this is due to cyber hygiene improvements for those businesses or the fact Cyber crime is still heavily under-reported. Speaking to many, the latter is likely the case. - Email compromise, BEC and Ransomware are still key attacks areas that need to be addressed. Lack of good Identity management practices seem to be a primary cause. Lots more to unpack but lots of useful data here.
