I recently had a discussion with Richard Conway from boardcycle on how to prepare for and navigate board meetings so as to make them as effective as is possible for all. This includes how to harness the Board’s experience and make good decisions without unnecessary speed bumps along the way. Thanks for this article focussing on what works best for members of superannuation funds, and the real issues promoting good governance. I can truly say the insights, wisdom and governance skill of my colleagues on the HESTA Board is phenomenal. As is their collective passion for strong member outcomes. We have an impressive range of nominating bodies, both employer and union. They include Catholic Health Australia, public and private hospital associations, the nurses union, aged care workers & their employers, disability & community sector workers, ACOSS and the Early Childhood Association. Directors have worked as CEOs and CPAs, trainers, educators, lawyers and advocates. Some have MBAs. Some are nurses, others have science degrees. In partnership with our nominating bodies, we secure directors that provide breadth and depth that many listed companies would envy. We are proud of this. Lets keep building on the strength of our current superannuation system. Let’s fix the real problems, not the perceived ones of the past.

After six years, it was great to attend the CFO Magazine A/NZ Sydney CFO symposium at the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney) in person today. It was great catching up with Richard McBride and meeting Karma Auden and Alena Bennett in person after so long chatting online! Some highlights: 💡Unilever is trailing four-day weeks and already operating 2+2 hybrid (2 days in the office and two days working from home), plus up to 20 days working from anywhere…hello Fiji 🇫🇯 💡Where businesses can’t operate flexible working, more challenging to recruit and have to pay more. 💡Be the person in the room who speaks up, and don’t let your dashboards obscure your insights. 💡The CFO needs to be the second-best salesperson after the CEO, and business partner shouldn’t be the goal that should be BAU. 💡It is good to see wellbeing and link to the bottom line - with the metric total cost of absence (costing one business 15% of the profit) - investing in wellbeing reduces absence and increases retention and engagement. (No surprise there, Philly Powell) 💡Cybersecurity is not a question of if you’ll be impacted. It’s when. So have a plan for dealing with it and bring the legal team in straightaway). 💡Michael Alp good presentation on the use of e-invoicing - benefits are enormous, but uptake surprisingly slow (136,000 entities registered) with 1.25m invoices per month - good to see collaboration between NZ/AU on this. 💡Finally, when presenting to the board, don’t be the smartest person in the room - simplify so that everyone understands what you’re presenting. #cfosymposium #sydney #icc

🤔 Who isn’t ‘rethinking corporate responsibility’? Last week I was welcomed as a guest to the ‘Australian Financial Review ESG Summit’ in Sydney. I did so as part of my stewardship introducing the Inner Development Goals (IDGs) to corporate Australia. The apt theme for this years summit was ‘Rethinking Corporate Responsibility’. There were panel conversations with an impressive ‘who’s who’ of Australian industry stakeholders covering a broad range of investment, integrity and market topics. The critical role that 'mindset' plays was a big common thread between speakers and points to why the IDGs Framework is essential to the organisational sustainability journey. Day 2's opening conversation with David Atkin, CEO, Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) rang out 'from the mountain top' for me. David very clearly stated the ‘existential crisis’ we face. He said "this situation is going in one direction. Governments, economies, countries and industries understand they need to make the [sustainability] transition…. Just let's ratchet 2024 quickly and get moving to the new world.” Given such a ratchet requires a mindset shift, I just had to ask David: “Given the ‘existential crisis’, how critical is collaborative mindset development for aligning our efforts and goals quickly?” Here’s what David said: “Fantastic. Okay, so if you believe in ESG’s as a company or investor, great! But you can't solve the issues on your own because these are broader. So, you need to be able to work together and collaborate with other investors. So, collaboration is essential…” No matter between nations, industry competitors (constructed to not breach anti-trust laws, of course) organisational leadership, departments or teams, the only way to achieve greater levels of collaboration and innovation, at speed and scale, is to develop the growth-mindset capabilities of everyone, at every level, involved. The Inner Development Goals provides a high-level research-based framework to guide this crucial level of human resource development. Leading the way are global institutions and international IDG partners like Ikea, Google, Volvo, Howspace and Novartis to name just a few. Australian organisations and agencies are perfectly positioned to take advantage of the IDG research and implementation experience of international businesses and institutions as well as the adoption at policy level in nations like Costa Rica and the IDG development funding provided by the EU. I particularly like how -it doesn’t start from financial metrics or regulatory compliance. -it suggests directors must use their hearts as well as their heads - these aren’t quant-based categories I think it could be adapted as a tool for assessing board performance.
