News travels fast - particularly bad news for #internationalstudents! “Australia has announced a significant increase in the financial requirement for international student visas, aiming to control record migration & address concerns over student exploitation. The new rule, effective from Friday, mandates international students to demonstrate savings of at least A$29,710 ($19,576) to qualify for a #visa. This is the second increase in about seven months, following a previous hike to A$24,505 from A$21,041 in October. These changes come amid broader efforts to tighten student visa rules, as the lifting of #COVID-19 restrictions in 2022 triggered a surge in #migration, contributing to the strain on #Australia's rental market. In March, the government also increased English language requirements for #studentvisas, & has been implementing policies to prevent students from prolonging their stay through various loopholes. In addition, the government has sent warning letters to 34 #education providers regarding "non-genuine or exploitative #studentrecruitment practices." Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil indicated that these institutions could face significant penalties if found guilty of misconduct. "Dodgy providers have no place in our international education sector. These actions will help weed out the bottom feeders in the sector that seek to exploit people & trash the reputation of the sector” … The government is now seeking to reduce migration rates significantly, aiming to cut the current intake by half over the next two years. "We are significantly reducing migration levels - we are in the middle of the biggest drop in migration numbers in Australia's history, outside of war or #pandemic," O'Neil stated. Education New Zealand (ENZ) announced this week that the country has set an ambitious goal to grow its international education sector over the next three years. That strategy aims to see the economic impact of the sector grow to NZ$4.4 billion by 2027 (US$2.6 billion), with an emphasis on growing and diversifying the number of foreign students enrolled in New Zealand. Some additional documentation may include: ✅Qualification certificates, academic, transcripts ✅Proof of employment history ✅Proof that you have enough funds to support yourself ✅Information about your financial guarantor (Identity and relationship) ✅English language proficiency test (such as IELTS) scores ✅You may also have to show evidence that you have sufficient funds to cover your living expenses throughout your stay. You will need to show you have NZ$ 20,000 for a full year of study or NZ$ 1,250 per month ✅Evidence that you are leaving New Zealand after the completion of your course. This can be in the form of flight tickets, however, it is optional ✅A police certificate if you are aged 17 years or over and plan to study for more than 24 months. I'm really encouraged to see the integrity and sustainability of Australia’s international education sector being prioritized in Australia’s recent policy changes. By preventing education providers from owning recruitment partners' businesses, pausing registrations for new providers, and requiring a track record of quality education delivery, the government is taking proactive measures to weed out individuals who seek to take advantage of students. And while official enrollment caps have yet to be announced, the Australian government is providing institutions with ample notice that change is coming. The legislation's focus on sustainable growth means that students can expect a more stable and supportive environment throughout their studies. With enrolment caps in place and additional student accommodation requirements, students will have better access to resources and support services. Australia has grown into a fantastic destination for international students and I’m hopeful that these initiatives will enhance the long-term student experience there. Financial firmness & future financing requirements for New Zealand Universities! Current Challenges: New Zealand universities face probable catastrophic outcomes if a one-off funding boost is not renewed. Despite some positive signs, such as the rebound in international student numbers, the financial circumstances remain stringent due to high inflation and battered baselines. Funding Needs: Universities New Zealand's CEO, Chris Whelan, emphasizes the imperative need for a 4% subsidy increase for degree-level enrollments in 2024 and 2025 to avoid an 8% funding cut, which could be devastating. Current Financial Status: Surpluses: Auckland, AUT, Victoria, and Lincoln are anticipating surpluses. Deficits: Waikato, Massey, and Otago are forecasting losses, with Otago anticipating a $24m deficit. Debt Levels: Short-term debt has surpassed $2 billion, though long-term debt has declined since the pandemic. Government Comeback: The government has acknowledged the financial burden but has not yet decided on continuing the temporary 4% funding expansion. An increase of 2.5% in 2025 and an impending tuition fee hike by up to 6% is being anticipated. Viewpoint: While some universities are positive about reaching financial stability by 2025, the segment requires balanced funding solutions to warrant long-term financial vigor and academic superiority.

Already this week we have highlighted prospective students & #agents in #china & #Malaysia are being put off Australia as a study destination. India the largest Australian market now follows suit. “Kanchan Adhikari, a student at Charles Sturt University (CSU) in the suburbs of #Sydney, #Australia, expressed her dismay over the #Australian government's recent policy changes. “I chose Australia because it has always been perceived as a welcoming country for #internationalstudents. However, recent changes—such as the doubling of #studentvisa fees and the new cap on #student #admissions — are shifting that perception. I will be advising my friends in India to reconsider their plans to study here,” he told The Free Press Journal. Her comments come after the Australian government, in a significant policy shift, introduced a new cap on international students last week, limiting the number of new admissions to 2,70,000 starting from 2025. This policy change comes on the back of a significant increase in visa fees, which includes a more than two-fold hike in the cost of student visas. The new cap & fee increase are expected to have profound effects on Australia’s global reputation & its economic landscape. Aman Goyal another Indian international student, also reflected on the implications of these new policies. “When I was still in #India, Australia was seen as a highly desirable destination due to its welcoming environment for international students. Now, it feels like the country is backpedaling. After initially encouraging students to come here to help address financial issues, the government is imposing a cap. Increase in Annual Living Costs for Students in Australia: Commencing May 10, 2024, the Australian government has implemented an adjustment in the annual living cost for students to $29,710. Additionally, there is an increase in the living cost for dependents. It is important to note that visa applications lodged before May 10 will be assessed according to the existing policy and will not be affected by this change. 10 Budget 2024 changes for Australian Immigration  1. Overall allocations for PR migrants will reduce slightly from 190,000 to 185000. 2. Employer sponsored has positive changes, with the Experience for the 482 visa reduced from 2 years to one year. 3. The 186 for PR has also received an extra 7000 allocations. 4. The Mates visa and extended Business Visitor visa for Indian nationals in going ahead. 5. Skilled Independent 189 visa allocations were cut by about half. 6. The Government will also introduce a new National Innovation visa to attract exceptionally talented migrants and replace the Global Talent visa. 7. 188 Business and Innovation visa to be closed and replaced with a new visa timing unknown. 8. Net overseas migration is forecast to approximately halve from 528,000 in 2022–23 to 260,000 in 2024–25. Much of this reduction will be in student visas.  9. Education providers will be given capped numbers for student visas and to go above the cap, they will need to build or provide accommodation. 10. New Ballot system for Work and Holiday Visas from China, Vietnam, and India.

#Diversity is taking a backseat down under! Universities all want to diversify, but in the cold light of day, inevitably follow the money. “Changes to #Australian visa policy risk undermining efforts to #diversify overseas enrolments by concentrating more of the multibillion-dollar #internationaleducation industry among a few big players, sector leaders have warned. New visa processing arrangements favour the richest #universities – which already dominate international enrolments – while encouraging #internationalstudent flows from #China, the dominant source country. Mid-tier universities face increasing obstacles in recruiting foreign students, particularly from South-east #Asia, #Africa & #LatinAmerica – long considered the go-to regions for an industry overexposed to China. Recent changes to institutions’ #immigration risk ratings leave just 16 of 42 Australian universities in the top level 1 category. They include the seven biggest universities & seven of the 12 institutions that already have the highest concentrations of overseas enrolments. Sarah Todd (IEAA-SF) vice-president of Griffith University, said many students had been attracted by the Covid-era removal of the cap on working hours during term time – a situation that prevailed for more than a year after the Labor government assumed office, despite warnings of perverse outcomes.
