People of Melbourne, it's that time AGAIN. We've got the creme de la creme of leadership talent in one room, for one night, with many nibbles and lots of drinks. If you've not been to an Atlassian Community Event before, you are officially missing out. It's a smorgersbord of curious attendees, who all have a hunger for different, better, or 'what if', and they're matched with a curated list of bloody legends who gift their time to provoke, inspire, and energise. On Wednesday 24th July, we're gathering again at CreativeCubes.Co in Melbourne with a spectacular line up. I'll be hosting the event, but our line up eclipses me! - we'll have the inquisitive mind of Culture Amp legend and podcast host Damon Klotz in conversation with Shane McCurry (Richmond Tigers, Melbourne Storm etc). They bring bucket loads of wisdom around culture, performance, and elite teamwork, but from very different fields. Can. Not. Wait! - the highly sought after Lynne Cazaly, who's a gun facilitator, amazing keynote speaker, acclaimed published author, and mentor to leaders from some of the worlds biggest brands. Lynne is going to help us manage the overload and overwhelm of modern work. - Anna Jaffe is Atlassian in house policy expert and government liason, with a huge passion for responsible tech. Anna ran a workshop at the customer flagship event, Team'24 in Las Vegas, and was one of our top rated sessions, on a framework for responsible tech decisions. Whether it's AI or anything else, Anna will help us understand the questions we should all be asking. So much insight into how discrimination and harassment happens at startup-related events has become apparent through this process, and StartupWA and Women in Technology WA Inc. (WiTWA) are ready to share what we've found. My (not-official, not-endorsed by either organisation) takeaway: There are those who see it and/or experience it. Then there are those who don't see it or experience it. Whether the latter group exists because: (a) their demographics lend them less towards being targeted (e.g. Caucasian like me), or (b) they are less likely to interpret something as being discriminatory or harassing, or (c) they are blind to it happening, blissfully or otherwise, or (d) they're perpetrators, well intended or not... ...I don't know. Could be a mix of all four. If you believe it's rare, or doesn't affect people in WA's startup ecosystem, I respectfully suggest you NEED to get along to this panel. It might be an eyeopener for you, and could help you make our ecosystem more inclusive. Can't wait to hear from four people who were part of the roundtable: Danielle Giles of Catalyst CoLab, Elizabeth Lang of Diversity Focus, Matt Willson, MAITD of The Up Next Company and Elisha Middleton of Green Shoots. The #NDIS Dysfunctional Holiday Special. 🎵 On the 12th day of Christmas, the NDIS gave me... 🎵 12 politicians gaslighting, (“Your voice matters!”—until it disagrees with our budget plans.) 11 tokenised consultations, (Hired for “co-design,” but your voice? Just noise in their PR shine.) 10 NDAs silencing, (“Shhh, don’t tell the public. Transparency’s overrated, anyway.”) 9 #funding cuts rebranded, (It’s not “less”; it’s just “streamlined”! Enjoy your minimalist services.) 8 reports ignored completely, (why provide $10k worth of #reporting evidence for them to be ignored.) 7 bots rejecting plans, (“RoboNDIS here! Let’s automate empathy right out of the process.”) 6 cherry-picked opinions, (“We heard your feedback! But only from Bob, who agrees with us.”) 5... FAKE CO-Design! (“We heard you loud and clear, now watch us do exactly what we already planned.”) 4 cuts to autonomy, (Caps on transport, tighter rules, and funding exclusions wrapped in red tape.) 3 layers of gaslighting, (“We care deeply,” they say, as #support slips through bureaucratic cracks.) 2 reforms recycled poorly, (New year, same cuts, wrapped in shinier bureaucratic spin.) & a system that’s choking on bureaucracy!🎶 NDIS is the gift that keeps on taking. Non-disclosure agreements to muzzle dissent, gaslighting participants into thinking slashed services are "empowering," & #reforms so botched even the ghost of RoboDebt is nodding in approval. Meanwhile, participants get a budget that barely buys lunch, let alone dignity.

Why WFH enables better contact centres. Physical contact centres are restricted by geography and the talent pool. Let’s say we build a centre in the Gold Coast , realistically people will travel a <1 hour commute. This gives us a total available workforce of about 300,000. Considering unemployment runs at 4% plus a % of people looking to change jobs, we are recruiting from a very small pool. We will only have so many choices. Now let’s go 100% WFH, that available workforce starts at 17 million, with the same % of unemployed and people looking to change jobs. The difference is massive. Recruit from a bigger pool, find better candidates, better conditions, better teams and results . It’s not rocket science. It’s all about people great people. I am delighted that Unity4 has leveraged this model for 24 years and has a wonderful team of skilled and passionate people. We are not restricted by geography or living with the daily commute! #workfromhome #knownoboundries #greatpeople

From The Table Talk Project … Part of the Mental Health workshop that founder Neil Milton ran for Yarra Ranges Council was about how to keep the conversation going. Too often someone will be brave enough to share their story of how they may not be coping right now and many are not equipped with what to say or how to help them. This question was asking the audience to discuss: What are some of the ways we can support those who can’t or wont see a doctor? The reality is for some seeing a doctor or health professional brings with it a whole bunch of trauma and for others seeing a doctor means they have to face their struggles. This can be all too much right now and so we brain stormed some ways we can help those people. I’m definitely not saying referral isn’t the right choice but it might not be right now. People came up with some wonderful ways. From sitting with them, to supporting them and bringing them a coffee, being on the journey with them, to offering to go with them and so many more. But what if that is someone in your family? Where do these conversations happen. The Table Talk Project creates space for these conversations with those at your dinner table to discuss even this deeper stuff. The key is be willing to be vulnerable with those around you and you might discover they need our support. Childcare impacts everyone - and underpins good development and good places. - 3.7 million people in Australia live in a childcare desert, where there are 3 or more children for every available place within a 20 minute drive. - A child who attends preschool is twice as likely to go on to tertiary education. - In Australia, once you have a baby, workforce participation drops dramatically and really doesn’t recover for 10 years, losing 55% of earnings over that time. - For every $ invested in education, we get $2 back. For children with any kind of disadvantage, we get $7 back. A bit depressing but important to know if we’re going to consider solutions. ANAO & their shiny reports—about as insightful as a toddler's finger painting on the fridge. NDIA will do just about anything to avoid collecting #satisfaction feedback. Report focus on quantitative regression models to estimate satisfaction levels among different groups in relation to NDIS. However, it is important to consider whether the methodology & data collection #practices are sufficiently robust & comprehensive to accurately capture participants experiences & satisfaction levels. How reliable is a #regression model when it’s playing telephone with the data? Isn’t that like using a magnifying glass to see the moon? Regression models & statistical estimates are fancy ways of saying, "We’ve got guesses dressed up as numbers." Why not just ask people directly? Oh right, that might reveal some inconvenient truths. The paradox of service If #NDIS is creating statistically significant negative impacts, shouldn't we be rebranding it as the National Disservice Scheme? Why is it easier to spot the flaws in a Hollywood remake than in a nationwide support system? The ostrich strategy - If you know the feedback's going to be bad, just don’t collect it. Brilliant! Why not add a ‘No Complaints’ policy while you’re at it? Ignorance is bliss, especially when you can bury your head in the sand & pretend everything’s fine. Here’s a revolutionary idea—talk to people? Direct surveys could do more good than a thousand spreadsheets. Qualitative Feedback - Ever heard of empathy? Interviews & focus groups might remind the bureaucrats that participants are human beings, not just numbers on a graph. Transparency isn't just for windows. How about some honesty in reporting? Admit when things are bad—it’s the first step towards fixing them. ACTUAL INDEPENDENT Third-Party Reviews! Want an honest opinion? Ask someone who doesn’t have a stake in the game. Third-party reviews might just be the reality check the NDIS needs. Use feedback to find out where the system is failing. Like a GPS for policy-making—reroute when you hit a roadblock. Remember that concept of ‘learning’? Apply it here. Continuous feedback should lead to continuous improvement, not just continuous paperwork. To truly grasp & tackle the issues within NDIS, how about we ditch the bureaucratic mambo jumbo & adopt methods that involve direct participant feedback? Get off your high horses, & maybe, just maybe, listen to the people affected by these policies. Double-check the findings with independent reviews & actual participant surveys.
