The Australian National Emergency Management Agency (#NEMA) today provided a notice for an upcoming Request for Information (RFI). The ACMA has formally warned two telcos for failing to join the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) scheme and directed another telco to comply with the scheme after it failed to pay the required fees. ACMA investigations found that Eureka Telecommunications Western Victoria Pty Ltd and Fly On IT Pty Ltd contravened the Telecommunications (Consumer Protection and Service Standards) Act 1999 by failing to join the scheme when required. A further ACMA investigation found Telnetworks Pty Ltd failed to pay its annual membership fees and case fees for the ombudsman’s complaints resolution service. The TIO scheme is an independent dispute-resolution service for customers with an unresolved complaint about their phone or internet service. All eligible telcos in Australia have a legal obligation to join the TIO scheme, pay the required fees and comply with decisions made by the TIO. Prepare for the 3G Network Shutdown – 28 October 2024 The 3G network in Australia will begin shutting down on 28 October 2024, impacting a range of devices still dependent on 3G connectivity. Affected devices include older mobile phones, EFTPOS machines, security systems, IoT equipment used in agriculture, and some medical devices. The shutdown will allow telecommunications providers to improve 4G services and expand 5G coverage, offering faster speeds and more reliable networks. It’s essential to check whether your devices are compatible with 4G or 5G. If your current devices are not supported, an upgrade may be required. Telstra, Optus, and Vodafone are contacting impacted customers, and Telstra provides a tool—text ‘3’ to 3498—to help users confirm their device compatibility. The Review, which takes place every three years, sees the Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee examine the experiences of people in regional, rural, and remote parts of Australia with telecommunications delivery, as well as considering the unique needs of First Nations communities. Previous Reviews have seen a number of major initiatives announced and delivered, such as the Mobile Black Spot Program and the National Audit of Mobile Coverage. The Mobile Network Hardening Program is an Australian Government initiative funding upgrades to improve the resilience of Australia's mobile network telecommunications infrastructure in regional and peri-urban Australia to: - prevent outages during a natural disaster - strengthen the resilience of telecommunications facilities to allow them to operate for longer during natural disasters - support the rapid restoration of services following an outage. Round 3 is now open for applications, with the Grant Opportunity Guidelines, Application Form and supporting documents available on GrantConnect. Applications for co-funding are open to Mobile Network Operators, Mobile Network Infrastructure Providers and Network Management Providers. Applicants are encouraged to review the Round 3 Project Noticeboard proposals when preparing their applications. Applications must be lodged by Friday 20 December 2024 (5:00pm AEDT).
