With the bond market shenanigans of 2022 still weighing on income investors' minds, it's important to ask what is real and what is myth. To do that, PIMCO managing director and head of Australia, Rob Mead, suggests focusing on starting yields. "The starting yield on your portfolio today is more or less the return you can expect on that portfolio over the next three to five years”. “Starting yields in 2022 were low, so we shouldn't be surprised by finding things weren't so attractive. 2023, which saw positive returns for bonds, was much more reflective of bond performance when starting yields are higher”. ANZ New T2 Fixed-to-Floating Bond Offering Yesterday's successful completion of another bond issuance, reflects strong investor confidence whilst ANZ's share price reaches a 52-week high. The AUD 15NC10 Tier 2 Wholesale Subordinated Note received a total orderbook of $4.7 billion, oversubscribing and closing by midday. The coupon is fixed at 6.124% per annum, paid semi-annually from settlement date to the first optional redemption date. Afterward, it will switch to floating at 3-month BBSW + 183 basis points per annum, paying quarterly until maturity. As of March 2024, ANZ's Tier 2 capital stands at AUD 28 billion, up 4 billion for March 2023.  This significant increase of approximately 13%  underscores ANZ's commitment to strengthening its capital base. ANZ's total qualifying capital has also risen, reflecting improvements across both Tier 1 and Tier 2 capital components. During APRA stress tests, ANZ demonstrated resilience by fulfilling all obligations, including timely payments on T2 subordinated debt and managing refinancing needs. This latest issuance serves as an indicator to ANZ's commitment to robust performance in the Tier 2 market, indicating growing investor interest. Given Australia suffers from incredibly poor leadership and politics and is hopeless at "per capita economics" or encouraging real growth, Australia's attitude towards migration over time would seem to be critical to how much growth and inflationary pressure there is and hence where interest rates need to be over time. If migration and population growth is low growth will likely be low and require support. In response to this or any other economic weakness, I would expect both major parties to relax their populist stance on migration (which is in all likelihood temporary in any case). In addition, our skills deficits (for example in construction) mean that we need to encourage migration in certain sectors. We require some migration. Hence nominal growth is likely to continue and has buffers around it which support "financial stability". Interest rates need only fluctuate around neutral as political and fiscal policies become dominant.
