Thomas pointed out that both the Bushveld and Dante are large, layed entrusions which produce reefs that are often enriched in precious metals. Bitmovin's Q1 showed strong growth, followed by a hugely successful NAB Show which has set us up for an impressive 2024. 2024 has been the most challenging year but also the largest and most successful year for Tank Stream Labs to date. We always highlight the positives but this year has certainly been tough with a perfect storm of events impacting our business, including the general economy with businesses failing to raise funding or unfortunately not surviving, small businesses still continue to work from home, vacancies in the commercial real estate market creating pressures on pricing, increase in competition and more recently the closure of the Sydney Start up Hub. As a business we need to continue to need to adapt and be ahead of the industry in order to succeed. I am incredibly proud of the Tank Stream Labs team that everyday work extremely hard to deliver a positive experience and high quality service to our members. Without the team, we would not have achieved all the successes. We have many loyal customers that have been with us for years and many that have joined throughout 2024. Thank you to all customers for working with us during the year. The TSL team are excited to continue to work with you all in 2025. Below is a summary of many successes for the business during 2024 but there are 3 that I personally am particularly proud of for the business: - Ranking 40 in the prestigious The Australian Financial Review Fast 100. We missed the entry last year and I told the team we had to apply for 2024 and hopefully would be successful. - The 2024 S2S Summit. After the inaugural summit last year, we wanted to be bold and go big by doubling our cost base to host at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. The team worked non stop for 10 months to deliver a fantastic program with very inspirational speakers. Only after 2 years, this Summit is now a recognised fixture of the Australian start up events calendar. - Launch of Tank Stream Suites. We opened a new office in the heart of Sydney CBD at Australia Square to provide private offices to small businesses. This was a massive pivot for our business but we achieved 100% occupancy within 6 months and we have aggressive plans for 2025 to grow this side of the business. It is important to recognise and celebrate every milestone achieved in a business. On the outside it might look successful but I can assure you that internally it is a challenge and requires a brilliant team to help deliver these milestones. Make sure you all take some time out, 2025 is going to be a good year!

Retail media startup Zitcha raises $15 million to accelerate US expansion Expanding into the US is a well-trodden path for Australian startups, but local retail media startup Zitcha now has $15 million in fresh capital to help it accelerate its growth Stateside. Founded by CEO Troy Townsend and chief operating officer Jack Byrne, Zitcha is already used by global consumer brands like Unilever, Microsoft and Lego, as well as leading retailers in seven regions, including Coles in Australia, The Warehouse Group in New Zealand and Ocado in the UK. It plans to open new offices in the US and hire sales and customer success teams there, with Townsend relocating to the US to lead the push. Zitcha aims to offer retailers and brands more sophisticated advertising solutions, driven by data. Its software platform allows retailers to essentially create their own retail media network (RMN) to sell advertising space to suppliers who want to reach the retailers’ customers. The platform automates these transactions across digital assets. such as websites, email and app, as well as in-store displays. The networks are unique to an individual retailer and tailored to its business model and customers, combining planning, delivery and insights in one place. The $15 million Series A round was led by US investment firm VMG Partners and represents the first investment in an Australian business by its venture arm, VMG Technology. Australian venture capital firm OIF Ventures also participated in the round, having previously invested in Zitcha in its $4.7 million seed round in 2022. Zitcha already has a presence in the US market, where the Boston Consulting Group forecasts retail media revenues will exceed US$100 billion in the next two or three years. The startup formed a strategic partnership with Axonet earlier this year to utilise store data and retail media touchpoints across tens of thousands of North American convenience stores. Now, it wants to realise what Townsend describes as “an enormous opportunity for Zitcha” in the US. “Our platform is uniquely positioned to help retailers and brands fully leverage the third wave of digital advertising and as US retail media networks mature, the demand for integrated, data-driven ad solutions has never been higher,” he said in a statement provided to SmartCompany. “With this investment from VMG Partners, along with their vast experience with consumer brands and retail technology, we are excited to tap into the immense prospects America offers.” But despite the lure of the “red hot retail media ecosystem” in the US, Bryne said Zitcha will continue to prioritise Australia, New Zealand and other key territories in Europe and Asia. #Business #Startup #US #USA #UK #Europe #World #economy #economic #invest #investment #investing #investor #News #BD #founding

I’m always inspired seeing Australian consumer tech founders doing great things. Lucy Mort is no exception – as the co-founder and CEO of Sunroom, a consumer app that provides a space for women to earn money by creating content and connecting with their communities, Lucy has used product and design to create a space that feels unique, and caters to their specific community. Building a product that can sometimes confuse people (wait - I can only talk on Wednesday?!), I loved these product design insights from Lucy’s interview with Natasha Gillezeau: 📈 Most Advanced, Yet Acceptable: Pioneered by Raymond Loewy, product design should be innovative, whilst accessible and familiar. In essence, as advanced as your target customer is willing to accept. The iPhone is a great example of this, providing incremental changes over time, whilst maintaining enough of the previous design so that it is familiar. ⬇ Less is More: Build on the assumption that your users have no idea what your product is. The more features, the more complexity, the greater the barrier to adoption. Strip things back, listen to your users and your metrics, find your 1-2 key features driving value and stickiness and double down. 👌 Selective perfectionism: Work smarter. Some features will require significant A/B testing and iterating and others won’t. Aligning incentives with your preferred outcomes The Australian Treasurer, Jim Chalmers, was quoted this morning as being open to a review of the R&D tax credit scheme Australia uses to reward companies for undertaking 'risky', early stage product research and development. The aim of the scheme is to make these efforts less financial uncertain, and encourage Australian innovation and invention*. The article cited examples of companies from the gaming industry - think slot machines ('pokies') - claiming a tax break for coming up with new ways for people to gamble. Gambling is simply one example of how the current R&D tax credit scheme provides incentives for activities that we might otherwise, as a nation and a society, choose not to encourage. R&D tax credits can be paid out to any organisation working on product research, regardless of the product. Australia recently agreed to a 2030 deadline for a transition to a circular economy, with work going on at Federal and state levels currently exploring exactly what that might mean. Whenever I've had the chance, I've highlighted the importance of using government levers like the R&D tax credit scheme to encourage the development of the types of products we want to see - long-lasting, repairable, modular, able to be disassembled, recyclable, and free of toxic materials - and to stop rewarding companies developing products that meet none of these criteria. A similar argument can be made about the new Future Made in Australia fund - aimed at encouraging domestic manufacturing capability. The fund currently has little or no controls in place to stop government grants going towards companies producing undesirable products. We'll potentially be directly funding the creation of products we are otherwise trying to phase out. This is a good example of where a systems lens can provide a really useful perspective on the design of a policy framework, including recognising when it is no longer fit for purpose. #strategicdesign #systemsdesign #policy * Arguably, the period when Australia was at its most inventive and productive was when the corporate tax rate was much, much higher than it is today, encouraging businesses to reinvest surplus income. That's potentially a post for another day.
