Ever had a chat with “James” from the Australian Wine Club? 😅🍷 (I had the "pleasure" recently and it was full on creepy) AI-powered voice callers like James have been stirring the pot lately. The Wine Group (aka Oak Road Estate) faced major backlash for using James to aggressively push wine subscriptions, leaving many feeling harassed and creeped out by his overly friendly yet persistent calls. Despite fines from the ACMA for breaching telemarketing laws, it seems James just won't take the hint! This raises a bigger question – as AI voices get more lifelike, how can we ensure they’re used responsibly for marketing? Have you had any unexpected encounters with AI callers? These are great guidelines from Wholegrain Digital and I think especially for two way communication such as voice and messaging where you could believe you are in real-time communication with a real person. It seems obvious now that it's going to get harder to tell quickly. Another thing that Lex Fridman raised on a podcast this week with Roman Yampolskiy on the 'Dangers of Superintelligent AI' is how powerful AI is likely to become at persuasion. There are people now who've made serious money from their human powers of persuasion and influence and super intelligent AI could put this power (or more power) into the hands of those using it for their own gain.

Our findings show that most brands in the consumer packaged goods market are stationary, as only 14% of the brands change their market share by more than three points. 📄 Abstract: This study investigates the variation in brand growth and decline across many different product categories. It uses recent consumer panel data from the UK, covering 639 brands across 28 categories, including food, personal care, home care and pet food, over a five-year period from 2008 to 2012. Consistent with the literature, the study finds that most brands in the consumer packaged goods market are stationary, as only 14% of the brands change their market share by more than three points. However, the study discovers that some categories are more dynamicthan others. The percentage of brands that change their share by more than three points is different across the categories, varying from 0% to 44%. The study further examines some potential factors that can affect the variation and finds that category penetration and purchase frequency have significant effects on the variation. The lower the category penetration and category purchase frequency, the lower the brand share stationarity. FIRST CHOICE. I built an FMCG Sales foundation in an incredible global snacking business. At the time the business was an underdog in the Australian market motivated by a simple mantra: ‘first choice’. Becoming first choice was a pan-organisational goal focused on winning with consumers and customers. In my capacity (field sales), I learned early that competitive advantage in samey categories could be gained through service excellence, specifically: having intent, being available, urgent, highly communicative and fostering partnerships. The measure? Getting the phone call first. Entering the crowded room of recruitment, this same philosophy underpinned our approach to getting established and achieving cut through. Our mantra was (and still is) ‘inspired to deliver a new standard’. After almost thirteen years, I can honestly say nothing has changed. We remain inspired, we continue to deliver a high standard and enjoy being ‘first choice’ to many employers and professionals. Is consumer confidence HIGH or LOW right now? That's the question I was asked to answer on my regular segment on Sky News last Saturday. The answer? Both. While the consumer confidence index did take a slight dip in March, it's actually higher than it was this time last year. And when you consider the rise in interest rates and cost of living pressures in that time, consumer confidence is relatively strong right now. I shared my thoughts on why and also discussed the consumer trend towards feel-good, optimistic marketing. In other words, share in the hope for an optimistic future with your customers (even better - inspire them to think that way) and you will win their hearts, minds and share of wallet.
