The Australian Financial Review article on #AI and Macquarie Technology Group Macquarie Technology Group successfully expanded beyond its telco offerings, and recently has been investing heavily into data centres – the infrastructure needed to support the AI boom. The company will be the first to build a data centre specifically for AI, called IC3 Super West. Heat and power ”It’s a function of timing. We finished plans a year to a year-and-a-half ago, but at the same time AI took off, so we redid our plans for the new centre to be ready for AI,” Tudehope says. “There will be more to come… but we’re first out of the blocks.” To run AI algorithms requires far greater power than cloud computing, and generates significantly more heat. Tudehope says traditionally this was managed in existing data centres by having every second rack of servers empty, which wastes space. In IC3 Super West and other data centres designed for AI, they used liquid-based cooling of the GPU chips, or complete immersion of the servers in cooling tanks. “Data centres built until now were for cloud. There’s still extreme demand for that, we see AI as being in addition, not in place of, cloud demand,” Tudehope says. Macquarie has also just added AI into its cybersecurity arsenal, using it to identify genuine attacks and filter out “false positives”. It’s also using AI to boost productivity internally – a Macquarie software programmer that’s skilled in the Python programming language can now also work across other languages thanks to AI. “It’s making staff more productive and more effective and using their skill sets more broadly,” Tudehope says. “Too often AI is thought about by leaders as this new way of reducing staff, as opposed to can AI be something that makes people’s jobs more interesting and less dull, boring and dangerous.” Full article here: https://lnkd.in/g2JbnwQ7

A worthy adversary for SMS? RCS/RBM is still one of the most talked about rich channels on events, panels etc. Excluding a few singular markets where there has been more success in adoption it still seems that ease of access can be an issue compared to WA or Viber. I see the biggest potential for RCS in Europe where WhatsApp pricing is higher than SMS.  I’m worried that enterprises need to start multiple registration procedures in markets where they’ve never needed to do it. Onboarding is still a mess with registration going through MNOs and Google. I doubt that Apple enabling RBM will make registering your brand or campaign any more straightforward. Taking into account that the A2P industry is moving towards value-based pricing and less of a commodity, it potentially can become just too expensive to start using RBM as a brand. We’re already seeing how some CPaaS providers are charging hundreds if not thousands of euros to change WhatsApp templates, and with RBM there’s even more work involved. ACCC publishes the mobile infrastructure report 2024. Optus has had the highest amount new Mobile sites in net terms. Optus has increased its total site count the most since 2020, up 15%, compared to 12% and 1% for Telstra and TPG, respectively. Optus and Telstra added roughly the same number of sites to their network in net terms, 1,256 and 1,221 sites, respectively, since 2020. TPG added 37 more sites to its network over the same period. The divergence in the number of mobiles sites added to the MNO’s networks has increased the gap between the MNO with the greatest and fewest number of sites. Optus now has 9k plus towers of which there are 4000 5G Towers . So when we say of the investments being made into new net towers it means greater choice for our customers.

Sure, 5G has been a speed revolution, showing download speeds up to a blistering 10x faster than 4G. Yet, the latest insights from Ookla’s Speedtest reveal an intriguing story about latency: the unsung hero of your browsing experience. Despite advancements, latency improvements are quite modest. For instance, in Nigeria, web pages open up to 47% faster with 5G, while in tech-savvy regions like Canada, the gains, though present, feel less dramatic. Why the disparity? Latency is more than just a isolated metric; it’s about data taking a long and winding tour through a maze of networks each time you tap a link. This of course goes beyond 5G access and core networks. Here’s a breakdown: 1. Network Congestion: Just like rush hour traffic, the more data hustling through at once, the slower things move. Even with 5G’s highways, digital traffic jams are still a thing. 2. Routing Decisions: Data doesn’t travel in straight lines but bounces between various points globally. Efficient routing means fewer bounces and quicker arrivals. 3. Server Speed: How fast a server can respond to your click affects speed too. A sluggish server can slow down even the speediest networks. 4. Physical Distance: Data has to obey the laws of physics, unfortunately. The further it travels, the longer it takes, even at light speed. 5. Optimization Techniques: Techniques like caching content closer to users and optimizing web page elements can massively cut down load times. So, while 5G significantly turbocharges our download capacity, the entire journey from server to screen involves a tons of other factors. Let’s debate the death of NB-IoT: A Turning Point for LPWAN? The landscape of Low Power Wide Area Networks is evolving and one of the key debates currently is the potential end of NB-IoT (Narrowband IoT) as players, like AT&T, announce plans to phase out the technology in favor of alternatives such as LTE-M. But does this signal the end of NB-IoT, or is it simply a shift in priorities for certain use cases? NB-IoT has long been seen as a solution for IoT applications requiring long range, ultra-low power consumption, and the ability to handle massive numbers of connected devices. This made it an ideal choice for industries such as utilities, agriculture, and smart cities. AT&T, announced it will discontinue NB-IoT services and migrate to LTE-M. This raises questions about the long-term viability of NB-IoT where other technologies like LoRa vie for dominance, and 5G promises faster, more flexible alternatives. NB-IoT vs. LTE-M: Key Differences Both NB-IoT and LTE-M are part of the cellular LPWAN ecosystem, but have distinct differences that make each suitable for different use cases. Here are a few key factors: • Data Throughput: NB-IoT is optimized for low throughput applications, (20-100KB), making it well-suited for use cases that require occasional bursts of data. LTE-M supports higher data rates, making it more appropriate for real-time monitoring or device firmware updates. • Latency: NB-IoT tends to have higher latency compared to LTE-M, which can be crucial for time-sensitive IoT applications and where immediate data transmission is important, such as asset tracking or fleet management. • Network Coverage: NB-IoT’s ability to reach into deep indoor areas / underground has been one of its strong selling points. However, LTE-M offers better compatibility with existing LTE networks. • Power Consumption: Both NB-IoT and LTE-M are designed for low power needs AT&T’s decision to discontinue NB-IoT reflects a broader trend in the industry. LTE-M offers several advantages in terms of scalability, network support, and service flexibility. AT&T emphasized that LTE-M provides a more versatile and future-proof platform for IoT, aligning with growing demand for higher bandwidth in real-time applications. With 5G, the distinction between NB-IoT and LTE-M might become less relevant as both technologies will likely integrate into 5G’s broader IoT ecosystem. While NB-IoT is facing some headwinds, it’s not necessarily the end. In markets where coverage is critical, or for applications with very low data needs, NB-IoT may still be key. When considering LPWAN, it’s essential to consider the specific requirements of applications - I.e. data throughput, network reliability, power consumption, and cost when determining the right fit. The lines between IoT technologies will continue to blur and involve a mix of solutions tailored to specific needs. It’s unlikely that NB-IoT will completely disappear anytime soon. In March 2022, the Commonwealth Government and nbn® Australia announced a $750 million co-investment commitment to upgrade nbn’s Fixed Wireless and Satellite networks to help meet the growing needs of homes and businesses in regional Australia. This is enabling nbn to upgrade its Fixed Wireless network using state of the art 4G and 5G technologies which is on track for completion in December 2024. To ensure nbn continues to progress our efforts to improve the energy efficiency of its network, we have installed Ericsson’s innovative equipment with Microsleep Tx software on 2,400 Fixed Wireless towers which services rural and regional communities across Australia. In line with our commitment to reduce annual energy use by 25 GWh per annum by December 2025, nbn is reducing power consumption by five per cent across its Fixed Wireless network which is the equivalent of powering 200 Australian homes.   Our national fibre upgrade program is central to our plan to enable long-term reductions in network power demand and improve customer experience. nbn is on track to enable over 10 million premises – or up to 90 per cent of the Fixed Line network – to access close to Gigabit speeds by the end of 2025.   Read more https://lnkd.in/gDnU8keG

Good Bye 3G 2006-2024 (RIP) I recall with pride when we launched our national 3G network called NextG on the 850MHz spectrum (that was hardly in use around the world) in 2006 with a conviction and boldness to change mobile connectivity in Australia forever. And that we did, by influencing the standards bodies, chipset vendors, the handset vendors and the equipment vendors creating a new ecosystem that will sustain and propel our 3G network. It also showed the world what can be done if you have the will. After eighteen years of diligently serving 2.8 million square km across the Australian landscape and 99.7% of the Australian population, we have to say goodbye to the 3G network with a heavy heart. It has connected Australians in their daily lives and in their businesses. It started a revolution called browsing that has now evolved in to video and streaming. It is nevertheless, is not an end, but a rebirth. It is an essential step in the mobile evolution to reallocate resources to more powerful technologies that can support growing demand, faster and reliable service that are energy efficient. 3G has metamorphosized and paved the way to 4G and 5G, and in the next few years it will give rise to 6G. So let’s salute a network that stood up tall, ramrod straight, for eighteen years every second, every minute, every hour, every day, 365 days of the year, and for eighteen years, connecting our customers and help us thrive. Goodbye 3G, rest in peace old friend.
