There's been a lot of press and combative interactions in the Australian agriculture sector in the last month or so related to the Live Export industry. It reminds me of a real challenge that many industries face - feeling like everyone 'out there' is against you. Time and again, however, Voconiq data shows that the world is much more nuanced and community members much more positive than the public discourse would suggest. This feeling is only exacerbated by the strong connection between what people do to pay the bills and their identity as a person. I talked a bit about this in a recent AgriFutures Australia podcast, drawing on our work and the work of others to show the real, problematic gap that often exists between self and social context. Progresses in technology present amazing opportunities such as this recent one regarding mustering remotely by Drones. World-first live remote muster by drone at Beef Australia 2024 a sign of things to come for cattle industry - ABC News (see https://lnkd.in/grtPqxP9) . Good to see NZ looking into a methane target relating to ‘not adding to additional warming impact for methane. It will provides for several key things, including; - a target consistent with what how long lived GHGs (CO2 & N2O) targets achieve not adding to additional warming once their ‘net zero’ target is achieved. - provides nz pastoral food sector a meaningful position to achieve on GHG reduction path. - consistency with how sequestration is accounted for - providing additionality to CO2 draw down. - an option to define a ‘net zero’ position for pastoral foods that as above is consistent to add to the long live GHGs, and importantly is feasibly scalable. 2022 methane levels are 2% higher than 1990. That is the lowest increase for any of the three main GHGs. NZ pastoral sector has achieved this through focuses on feed efficiency. That focus has moved more recently to methane reduction opportunities. These will accelerate actual methane reductions & reductions per unit of production.

Coles supermarket labelling fresh produce as treated with X-rays. Phytosanitary irradiation is a sterilising treatment that uses wavelengths of energy including X-ray and gamma ray that kill or sterilise pests that are considered a biosecurity threat. The treatment is an alternative to other existing end-point treatments including fumigation (e.g. methyl bromide, ethyl formate), chemical dips and sprays (dimethoate), vapor heat treatment and cold disinfestation. When asked if irradiation affects the nutritional properties of the food, FSANZ says "permitted radiation dose for fresh fruit and vegetables do not pose a nutritional risk to the population"(whatever that means) and links to no studies🙈🤷‍♀ So apparently not all bacteria or viruses can be killed using food irradiation but what does this radiation do to enzymes that are in foods that our body uses for digestion? The x-raying of fresh produce that has left the farm gate and is headed directly to the supermarkets is odd? What purpose does it serve? We do know that the domestic market has seen strong diversification supported with over 60 different crops being treated. The ICA-55 trade pathway has subsequently grown from less than 1% to over 30% produce treated in 3 years. Additionally, the report states that "the requirement to label fresh produce as “irradiated”, "treated by X-ray” or similar wording can therefore be considered a disadvantage, since fresh produce treated by other phytosanitary treatments (chemical pesticides and fumigants, vapor heat treatment, cold disinfestation) do not require such labelling. These labelling requirements were created with good intent: to empower consumer choice. Nevertheless, after 20 years with no notable consumer concern, there is a strong case to consider amending or removing the requirement for domestic labelling. There is also new evidence that the intended purpose of labelling has worked counter intuitively, creating a soft trade barrier that has increased the cost of supply and reduced consumer choice in some domestic markets."
