Which tools and technologies can help you design energy-efficient buildings?
Modeling building energy performance is important, but energy modelers need to consider the wider energy supply chain. Using more energy when the power system has a high proportion of renewable energy benefits the power grid and reduces building emissions intensity, leading to lower energy costs and emissions. This encourages initiatives like switching from gas to electricity for domestic hot water and heating, enabling load flexibility through smarter building controls, and investing in thermal storage and other distributed energy resources such as PV and battery storage. Understanding when and how buildings use energy is crucial.

What are the most important design principles for carbon-neutral buildings?
Start with maximising on-site renewable energy generation, like rooftop solar panels with battery storage. If on-site generation doesn't cover all energy needs, supplement it with renewable energy from external sources. Traditional methods involve 'green power' products using renewable energy certificates, but the building's actual energy use might not align with the renewable sources (or even be on the same grid). Instead use local, hourly-matched renewable energy certificates for genuine zero emissions supply. Additionally, transition from gas to electricity for space and water heating, and cooking, enabling use of renewable energy for these purposes too.

You're planning a wind turbine project. How do you choose the best energy storage system?
Determining the optimal capacity and duration for your energy storage project is a techno-economic modelling problem. The modelling considerations include: - Capex and Opex costs - Network connection capacity - Network service pricing - Co-located generation profile - Storage technology performance (degradation, losses, round-trip efficiency etc) - Market pricing assumptions (energy, capacity, ancillary services) - Power purchase agreement / off-take arrangements - Value of renewable energy certificates - Engineering constraints (size, space, etc)
