Prevention and Reduction of Anxiety in Autistic Preschoolers Through an Autism-Specific Parent-Mediated Intervention: A Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial Evaluating Short and Longer Term Outcomes https://lnkd.in/em5zzhRW N=57 parents of kids with autism aged 4-5 years (where according to ADI-R, autism presentation for many is 'most severe'). Cool Little Kids (CLK) - Coping with Uncertainty in Everyday Situations (CUES) was the intervention. Results: Compared with TAU, "a significant decline for only the intervention group in anxiety (specifically, anxiety around uncertainty) from pre-post intervention, maintained at one year follow-up." Needs more follow-up work but this is encouraging. 'Intolerance of uncertainty' has been research rising in autism circles for a while now. Equiping at-risk kids with skills to potentially help with such an issue is important.

Loving this term “radical decontextualisation” as a feature of the trauma culture we are swimming in. I am witnessing how the radical decontextualisation of peoples experiences of violence and oppression result in self serving expert opinions and the rise of the welfare industry (including therapeutic services and state sanctioned child abduction). I'm deeply concerned about the recent NDIS decision to reduce art therapy funding by 60%. This drastic cut, based on the claim that art therapy is "not evidence-based," disregards the wealth of research demonstrating its effectiveness for people with disabilities. Art therapy provides a unique and vital means of expression, communication, and healing. I personally have worked with nonverbal individuals with disability and chronic life limiting conditions for over 10 years and have witnessed firsthand the impact of art therapy interventions where “talk” therapy failed. I urge the NDIS to reconsider this decision and prioritize the needs of participants who benefit significantly from art therapy. It is also one of the symptoms of an eating disorder that is hardest to treat in a meaningful and enduring way as it often goes beyond behavioural change. Researchers at Swinburne University are investigating psilocybin-assisted therapy as a potential treatment for body image disturbance, with a world-first trial currently running for women with partially recovered anorexia nervosa. I have found the polyvagal theory clinically useful working with trauma and tapping/Havening - and at the same time I have had reservations to the oversimplification of how we regulate the psychological and physical reactions to trauma. In my view of the world there is more complexity and grading between social engagement and fight-flight - a major state of increasing defense, culminating in fight-flight when we pass the ”amygdaline” as it is expressed sometimes in sports psychology. Polyvagal is very useful as a starting point for regulating arousal and the term ”neuroception”, for how our trauma responses can be triggered faster than conscious perception seems 100% accurate to me. In addition, polyvagal theory shows the incompleteness of talk therapy and the often inherent misleadment of the diagnoses in the DSM-V. This article gives my reflections a voice. I hope to see the path opened by the polyvagal theory and its clinical usefulness explored further. Your reflections are welcome.
