Information on the responsiveness of the New Zealand (NZ) health system to Asians to enable navigation of healthcare services is currently lacking. Barriers experienced by Asian patients to enable optimal navigation of, and engagement with, healthcare services are also sparse. Effective communication of incidental findings is essential for patient care. This seems like a no brainer in a digital age. Your GP has the full view a patients clinical history , none of these other services do. GP’s could set up nurse triage who could prescribe and this model would support continuity of care for patients. Why are we creating expensive new models of siloed care when we can redesign an existing model that we know works and modernise it. #primarycare #afterhourscare

RACS has raised strong concerns in response to a proposal to change the protected title for podiatric surgery to ‘surgical podiatrist’. In its submission to the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, co-signed by the Australian Orthopaedic Association, RACS says the change poses risks to public safety, patient understanding, and professional standards. It also contradicts Section 115A of the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, which restricts the use of the title ‘surgeon’ to those who have completed extensive surgical training. RACS President Kerin Fielding says the legislation makes it clear that terms like ‘surgical’ or ‘surgeon’ should be reserved for those who have undergone comprehensive, medically recognised specialist surgical training. "These terms are protected by law and describe specialists who have completed rigorous, lengthy surgical education and training. Allowing non-surgical professionals to use these terms risks misleading patients about the qualifications and expertise of the person providing their care”. AOA has provided a formal response disagreeing with a proposed change of title for podiatrists who perform surgical procedures to 'surgical podiatrist'. The term 'surgical’ creates confusion in the community and the impression that the podiatric proceduralists are competent in undertaking surgical procedures requiring accreditation under Australian Medical Council (AMC) standards. This is not the case and should not be supported. AOA supports RACS's concerns and response to the proposed changes, as detailed below. An updated Adult Acute Mental Health Inpatient Unit guideline has been released in the Australasian Health Facility Guidelines. These guidelines outline the operational, functional, and design requirements for adult acute mental health inpatient units. Several important updates have been made to reflect a co-design process, incorporating input from clinical, operational and technical experts, as well as participants with lived experience of mental illness.   The guidelines are developed by the Australasian Health Infrastructure Alliance, a collaboration of public health authorities across all Australian jurisdictions and New Zealand, administered by Health Infrastructure. Conduct the ACSQHC Staff Survey on Patient Safety Culture The Australian Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture has been developed by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care and the Commission recommends the use of the tool in all Australian Hospitals to monitor and measure patient safety culture.   Clinical and non-clinical staff observe different aspects of how the hospital works and are often the first to notice patterns of unsafe practice. The survey provides an expertly validated tool to assess the hospitals status of patient safety culture, raise awareness and develop appropriate interventions.
