My 2024-25 Federal Budget pitch to the Government is published in The Australian today. I can't recall a more anticipated Budget for the higher education sector than the one coming on May 14 - the culmination of 16 months in developing the landmark Australian Universities Accord final report. We're expecting an initial downpayment on the Accord, setting in train reforms that will support the expansion of our university system for the nation's benefit. What I love about this podcast is that it often challenges me to rethink my own perspectives. This episode discussed the New South Wales EduChat chatbot, a GenAI platform built on GPT 4 and 4 turbo (for now) and trained on NSW curricula and guardrails. I’m still of the opinion that there’s no such thing as “safe” AI, but that we should teach it anyway. I also don’t think tutor-style chatbots are necessarily the best future of the technology. Nonetheless, a few moments in this episode really made me optimistic: - Dan Hart’s comment that the approach reduces the mental load of educators confronted with thousands of edtech vendors trying to sell them “the best” AI - Addressing the equity issue (including in regional areas like mine) of providing access to a mixture of the most accurate models - Michelle Michael’s comment which is worth quoting in full: “It’s not about integrating the technology… it’s around how we critically assess the impact on learning outcomes and student engagement.” These aren’t AI grifters selling sparkle, nor are they corporately owned non-profits aggressively shoe horning into schools. This is a group of education professionals taking the lead on developing the technology alongside educators and students. Transforming Museum Experiences for Neurodivergent Communities Campus Plus is pleased to announce the commencement of an Australian Government Department of Education's National Industry PhD project that brings together RMIT University and the National Museum of Australia. Project Overview: Our project, Helping cultural institutions create digital environments reflective of audience neurodiversity, explores ways galleries, libraries, archives, and museums can make digital content more accessible to neurodivergent audiences. Using a transdisciplinary, disability-led design approach, we aim to improve access to cultural heritage in Australia and beyond while uplifting skills in the museum sector. Collaborative Approach: RMIT College of Design and Social Context, School of Design brings deep expertise in design research partnerships for access and equity, as part of international leadership in practice-based research (#1 for Art & Design in Australia, #18 internationally, QS 2024). The National Museum of Australia contributes one of Australia’s largest online museum audiences and a digital uplift program to develop best-practice guidance for institutions seeking to respect, respond to and be shaped by neurodiverse experiences. Value for Industry: Museum audiences are bigger online than onsite, and neurodivergent-identifying people comprise a significant proportion of digital visitors. Neurodivergent-led design principles will foster affirming, respectful, collaborative, and enjoyable online visits, enhancing how neurodivergent individuals engage with and contribute to museum collections, programs, and spaces. Value for Academia: The project supports skills uplift in Australia’s culture sector, advancing disability-led approaches to accessibility and equity in digital transformation. It aligns with RMIT’s mission to empower communities through inclusive, impactful research and education. Student Perspective: Jorge Arreola says, "After five years of working in the GLAM sector, I know how rare it is to find opportunities that focus on accessibility design in galleries and museums. Which is why I’m so excited about my National Industry PhD. This partnership allows me to research how we can design experiences that embrace the diversity of bodies and minds when it comes to museum experiences. I’m deeply grateful to the NIPHD program and my supervisory team for supporting this work, and I look forward to creating impactful outcomes in accessibility-focused design." I was flown to Beijing to speak at the World Youth Development Forum-APGYD. I shared how Future Minds Network is reimagining education and the digital economy in Australia. Here were the key takeaways: ✅The digital divide is serious 1 in 4 Australians are digitally excluded. This means they miss out on social, educational and economic benefits that digital technology provides. ✅Digital skills are now non-negotiable There is an urgent need for digital skills in the workforce. Businesses are willing to pay an 8% premium (or $5,408) for candidates with data and digital skills. ✅Digital literacy is not just about the internet Technology is transforming the way we learn and work. It’s crucial for young people to not only understand technology, but have experiential learning to apply it effectively. This is precisely what we emphasise in our programs like FutureHack. Young people apply emerging technologies such as VR/AR. Embracing digital technology is not just nice to have, it’s the key to a brighter future Thrilled to share I'll be back in Beijing next week. Truth, right here. I am elated to have just hired See Me Please's first full-time employee. He just retired from a career as a professional athlete. I hired him because he has grit and works hard. He tells me, if given an opportunity, he will eat bricks for lunch. By choice, I'm bootstrapping See Me Please. At least for the first year. I'm of the view that proven demand and growth, based on the exceptional value we deliver to our early partners, is in the best interest of the business's long-term success. It provides choice, flexibility and negotiation leverage when (if) the time comes to explore potential investment partners. Time will tell if See Me Please will move at the velocity I'd like it to. But if it does, I care too much to give my business away. I have my eyes wide open, this approach means working VERY hard to get it out of the gates. There is absolutely nothing wrong with flexible work and work-life balance depending on your priorities. At the same time, there's immense value in hard work. Hard work can give a sense of purpose and direction, helping a team feel like they are contributing meaningfully to something larger than themselves. Richard Joffe you're singing to me. 👏🏻This week we kicked off our Communicating with Impact Program with Steve Hassett and his amazing team at Foundation Technologies Australia! An brilliant first session, great team and contributions! Communication is key, especially in the new world of AI & remote work. Now more than ever we need to ramp up the human side and create communication that cuts through both internally and with external suppliers, stakeholders and our customers. Communication is the response you get. In the 1st session we unwrapped communication styles and preferences and the importance of body language and looking at what is not being said. We looked at strategies, tools and tips of paying attention to non verbal cues and the importance of listening & questioning and so much more. Lots of hands on activities to bring learnings to life a d time for each person to share their OOV and workshop team norms & wants and needs. The next session will be about rapport building to influence and communicate through negotiation along with building a culture of gratitude.
