That's why they are Nobel winners. For the rest of the world, we can choose a path of passion and pursuit of excellence or live a mediocre life with 9to5 job that only gives us money to search for happiness elsewhere. And yes, then question this work  philosophy. Before questioning billionaires who advise long working hours, It's time to question our priority.  Is our work, just a means to earn a livelihood or does it mean something much more?  Someone can say that he is very efficient to finish his allocated job in 4 hrs and will do whatever he wants. These are the sure to be replaced by AI, as they are probably already using AI or their job is so streamlined that AI can do.  It is not about neglecting other parts of life. It is about focusing on the most important part that would give long term results.

TL/DR: What did you eat for breakfast at the weekend? A cohort of tasty designers? Our Sharks did.   Last weekend, 13 of our post-graduate design students completed their 7-week module in Creative Entrepreneurship by facing their deepest fears, and two of New Zealand’s fiercest sharks, in a live Shark Tank experiment.   Each student was given 7 minutes to present an amazing new product or service that incredibly, didn’t exist 7 weeks ago.   Back then, they were asked to cast themselves in the role of founder of a start-up that uses an emerging (or re-emerging) technology to solve a real-world problem in an innovative way.   For emerging technology, think AI, biochemistry, solar, robotics, etc, and for ‘re-merging’ think anything ancient, forgotten, or obsolete.   Then through a process of visioneering, questioning, R&D, prototyping and iterating, they would build their product (or service), develop a business plan, then reveal their immaculately conceived baby to our panel of world-famous sharks (who we’d deliberately starved).   How would the students fare? Would they get ripped to shreds?   Our sharking duo, Simon Coley and Wendy Kerr, are no strangers to this game having survived it in the real world. Simon, founder, the Karma Drinks range, believes in doing good through trade, building bridges (and community), the power of optimism, great design, and the wonderful combination of creativity and stupidity that one must surely possess in order to embark upon any world-changing endeavour. Wendy Kerr, angel investor, C-suite whisperer, in-demand speaker, best-selling author, strategist and FemTech ally, and Icehouse Ventures incubator, has seen it all. Chewed it up. And spat most of it out.   So how did it go? We saw innovations in EdTech, MedTech, more sustainable packing design, gaming at the intersection of fitness, AI-powered apps and services, an intelligent shoe that understands your rheumatic pain, and more. (I took the tough decision not to show the work, lest the students pursue their own IP.)   And the Sharks' reaction? Did they smell the fear? Were they tempted by the fresh meat on offer? Simon: “…it was a pleasure to be able to review the work shared by these budding Creative Entrepreneurs. The standard of ideas that were commercially viable was surprisingly high given the short length of time they’d had to develop. Even more impressive was the common thread of social entrepreneurship running through all the concepts.”   Wendy, on how the business ideas/solutions presented struck a chord: “The way the students have been able to parlay the personal into business opportunities is enviable.”   And on the way the student’s received feedback, took it onboard, and built better because of it: “…Watching all of you being coachable, and being able to learn in the moment…was remarkable.” Now, to the patent office! My 2024-25 Federal Budget pitch to the Government is published in The Australian today. I can't recall a more anticipated Budget for the higher education sector than the one coming on May 14 - the culmination of 16 months in developing the landmark Australian Universities Accord final report. We're expecting an initial downpayment on the Accord, setting in train reforms that will support the expansion of our university system for the nation's benefit. Sexual harassment is happening every day in the #retail sector, with young women bearing the brunt of it. Researchers from the University of Sydney's Centre for Gender Equality and Inclusion @ Work have published a new report that investigates the prevalence of harassment and what can be done to protect staff – especially the thousands of young people working in retail. 150 international students, design thinking, and cake? Last week, I had a fantastic time teaching design thinking and entrepreneurship at the Future Forte Australia Conference. We brainstormed wild ideas, laughed through some tech mishaps (because what's a workshop without a microphone glitch?), and dove deep into what it means to innovate and solve real-world problems. Here are three key lessons we explored: 1️⃣ Empathy is the foundation – Understanding the needs and perspectives of real people drives better, more meaningful solutions. 2️⃣ Fail fast, learn faster – Design thinking embraces failure as part of the process. The quicker you test and iterate, the quicker you discover what works. 3️⃣ Ideas are only as strong as the team – Collaboration is the heart of innovation. The best ideas come when diverse minds work together. PBL Future Labs Initiative Takes Flight at Carmel College, Thornlands! We're thrilled to announce the implementation of an innovative AI x Project-Based Learning (PBL) program focusing on Australian food security and sustainable agriculture, aligned with the Australian Curriculum code AC9HG9K04 with PBL Future Labs. This initiative transforms traditional classroom learning into real-world experience by connecting students with local agricultural experts and businesses. The project was adapted from the future farming project that I created. Key Program Features: -Partnership with a sustainability advocate and social media educator who brings contemporary engagement strategies through TikTok -Collaboration with a local produce specialist who provides firsthand insights into food distribution systems -Student-led support projects benefiting four local farms, creating authentic learning opportunities -Curriculum integration examining challenges and solutions in Australian food production systems This program empowers students to engage directly with sustainable food production challenges while developing practical solutions that benefit our local agricultural community. The hands-on approach combines academic learning with real-world application, fostering a deeper understanding of food security issues. What a week! Thanks to the efforts of the team at Social Enterprise Australia hundreds of diverse social entrepreneurs were given the opportunity to experience the sessions and events at SXSW Sydney 2024. I am extremely grateful to be one of them. The event is full on. Numerous sessions clash. But as a collective, the SEA participants shared experiences so that those who could not be at events they wanted to attend were able to get a summary of what took place. Meeting new people with common interests and enjoying the experience with them was another highlight for our participants. There were also insights from the group on how diversity was catered for (or not). The organisers are to be commended for including a number of measures to make the event more accessible but it did feel like these measures were ad hoc and sometimes an afterthought. At some sessions they were non-existant. By being given the opportunity to be in the room we got to see what still needs to be done. Now to get a seat at the organising table and make the event even better. There is a lot that the SXSW Sydney organisers and sponsors like the NSW Government can learn from #socialentrepreneurs about what needs to be improved for the future in terms of making participation at all sessions more equitable for all as well as making diversity more represented in the sessions. For me personally, I took in as much as I could within my health limitations. Many sessions I attended did reflect some diversity in a genuine manner. In one session, panellists spoke first-hand about the challenges faced by all game developers and how these are compounded for women and First Nations developers. Biases and funding inequities are being addressed but they remain as issues in the wider circles. Earlier I had I heard from two successful women game developers from India who have founded their own game studios. Their stories are beacons for others to follow. In another session a female developer I spoke to said that when she applied for funding years ago she received $40k but the male recipients received $240k. All of them failed. She is still going and scaling up! There is a lot of systemic change to be done but we also need to acknowledge and be grateful to those who have pushed the needle to this point. My highlight for the week was the session with our own Julie Trell of Playful Purpose (image below). It was an absolute blast! R#eal-time creativity in action with Applied Improv (the other AI). This is how all brain-storming should look like. This alternate thinking that comes naturally to SEs needs to be showcased to all event attendees. Let's advocate for a #SocialEnterpriseStream at the next SXSW. Thanks to Christina Chun and the whole SEA team. These priceless experiences could not have happened without you. 🙏🏽

Building a stronger economy to deliver a better future for all Australians requires the creation of new knowledge and skills. Universities are central to this task – providing the highly skilled workers and the research and development to guide Australia through both challenges and opportunities in the coming decades. From breaking ground on infrastructure and building energy projects to mastering new technologies and adding new industries to our economic mix, universities have a key role to play. We welcome the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s acknowledgement of Australia’s universities and the need to open the door to a university education for more Australians, which will underpin our future prosperity. Our graduates and our researchers hold the skills, knowledge and ideas that will continue to power the economy, spur Australia’s productivity and define Australia’s success in the coming decades. The Australian Universities Accord final report includes a series of recommendations to underpin the expansion of university teaching and research and we urge the government to commit to these reforms that will support our sector to continue delivering for the nation and our people.

The Work, Live, Play, Learn project at The University of Sydney Business School is an ambitious and inspirational approach to understanding, integrating and co-designing with the authentic stories, experiences and insights of our student community. Over the course of the six years it has been running, WLPL has engaged in over 350 conversations with students from across the School, led by their fellow students and recent graduates, and shared on social media and around the School. It is a critical ingredient in our transformation of teaching and learning. The digital storytelling approach embeds the understanding of the student experience within learning and life spaces of our students. The blurred lines between work, live, play and learning are messily integrated and developing a nuanced and authentic understanding of this, from the students themselves enhances their own and their cohorts experiences and is a key contributor to how we are making our education better at the Business School. Media Literacy is crucial in the fight against mis/disinformation. The inaugural Media Literacy week in Aotearoa schools is 13-17 May, presented by the National Association of Media Educators. This is an important initiative that will help ākonga further develop critical thinking skills.
