We're happy to announce that the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) has awarded funding to CIFOR-ICRAF to support our critical work in tree diversity conservation. Trees are the cornerstones of healthy ecosystems, but they face major threats from deforestation and climate change. With 30% of the world's 60,000 tree species threatened with extinction, urgent action is needed. This funding will be instrumental in strengthening our field genebanks across Africa, which safeguard the future of these vital resources. Here's why these genebanks are vital: ▪️Safeguarding Diversity: We house one of the world's largest tropical tree seed collections in Nairobi, ensuring the survival of threatened species. ▪️Adaptability Research: Our field genebanks, established in collaboration with national partners, provide valuable insights into tree growth, development, and adaptation under different conditions. ▪️Restoration Efforts: We supply high-quality planting materials for critical restoration projects across the continent. Good to see NZ looking into a methane target relating to ‘not adding to additional warming impact for methane. It will provides for several key things, including; - a target consistent with what how long lived GHGs (CO2 & N2O) targets achieve not adding to additional warming once their ‘net zero’ target is achieved. - provides nz pastoral food sector a meaningful position to achieve on GHG reduction path. - consistency with how sequestration is accounted for - providing additionality to CO2 draw down. - an option to define a ‘net zero’ position for pastoral foods that as above is consistent to add to the long live GHGs, and importantly is feasibly scalable. 2022 methane levels are 2% higher than 1990. That is the lowest increase for any of the three main GHGs. NZ pastoral sector has achieved this through focuses on feed efficiency. That focus has moved more recently to methane reduction opportunities. These will accelerate actual methane reductions & reductions per unit of production.

I was recently invited to share the co-design of a future orchard in 2030 at the New Zealand Apples and Pears conference in Hawkes Bay. Supported by the Ministry for the Environment | Manatū mō te Taiao, Circularity was commissioned to research and inform the visual design of a low-waste, nature-positive orchard for 2030. This collaborative project brought together growers, scientists, retailers, innovation specialists, and Māori representatives to explore the potential and reality of this vision. We heard of the need for a holistic approach to orchard practices, consideration for the role of the orchard in the community, its reliance on nature's living systems like soil and water, as well as the global customer base. At the conference, I had the pleasure of presenting the final design including seven on-orchard practices that have the potential to deliver multiple benefits—environmental, economic, climate, social, and cultural—aligned with Te Tiriti principles to deliver ecosystem health, reduce harm, and enhance prosperity for the industry I was joined by the industry's future leaders, to explore their visions for future orchards and pathways to achieve them. Thank you to Hannah Greaves, Grace Fulford, Liam Sykes, and Pip Terekia for joining me on stage in the incredible Toitoi - Hawke's Bay Arts & Events Centre in Hastings. Moving forward, NZAPI will use this work to spark conversations about the future of orchards within the industry—among growers, packers, and marketers of apples and pears for domestic and export markets. Crystal Ball Warning. The United Nations Transparency Protocol (UNTP) has been adapted to the Australian context as the Australian Agricultural Traceability Protocol. No-one including myself has perfect crystal ball, but I suspect it's the biggest top-down innovation since the decision to remove trade barriers and tariffs. As a relatively wealthy, developed nation, and also one of the highest-emitting per capita, we could – and should – be doing considerably more to ‘play our part’ and demonstrate global leadership in addressing our climate and biodiversity crises together. Recloaking Papatūānuku presents a well-researched, cost-effective, multi-win and high value opportunity for Aotearoa New Zealand to globally pioneer the nationwide implementation of a nature-based solution to the climate and biodiversity crises. Recloaking Papatūānuku is not a substitute for deep and urgent emissions reductions; rather, it is a necessary complement. It is a solution to address a range of critical and interlinked ecological issues synergistically, and with the degree of urgency and ambition of action that Papatūānuku needs and deserves. Success could see Aotearoa become the first nature-positive nation in the world. RD Watt Lecture 2023: Sustainable Agriculture: Challenges and Opportunities Towards 2030 https://lnkd.in/enS3_4RA In NSW we are in now challenged by industry and governments to increase agricultural production by 30 billion dollars in regional revenue by the year 2030. This is a major challenge for the NSW community of landowners and primary producers if we make the changes to reduce the reliance on fossil fuels. Our experienced speakers will explain how we can expect to reach this target. Increasing sustainability in food and fibre production will make development sustainable against adverse effects to our environment. But, why is it necessary for development to be sustainable? And what does sustainability imply from a practical, farm point of view? The 2023 RD Watt Lecture provided an appreciation of the key elements necessary to navigate through sustainability, with an emphasis on agricultural sustainability. Check out the lecture here. #Seaweed farming and its product development is one of the fastest growing industries globally. Well done Invest Regional NSW getting behind an expanded vision of a global-scale regenerative seaweed aquaculture sector in Australia. The vision is within reach. There is already a web of activated global supply chains for seaweed-derived food, nutraceuticals, bioplastics and more. The differentiated species and pristine natural advantages we have here in Australia could be a valuable lifeline to high nutrient and low emissions bioproducts from production and processing hubs connected to manufacturing/biorefineries. It is so satisfying connecting the key stakeholder groups, extending collaborations, commercial partnerships and investment pathways -- this is already shaping up to be HUGE with a coordinated ecosystem and the support from this network. Some new research from GOTERRA and our exceptional friends at The University of Queensland When I first started Goterra I committed to keeping at least one part of our focus on what comes next. The idea that the food waste of today will not look the same as what is wasted tomorrow. If we've done our job right as citizens of the world, we'll waste less, we'll valorise more, we'll upcycle and recycle. If so, then what's left will be sludges, slurrys, contaminated and difficult things that don't look like food at all. For Goterra to remain relevant, we're going to have to understand how to manage these waste types, but more importantly, what happens to all the bad things when we're done. We're looking across the gambit of food waste challenges, #PFAS, #microplastics and of course, #heavymetals. Approximately one third of all greenhouse gas emissions is estimated to come from food production. Plant-based diets can reduce emissions by 75%, compared with diets containing even moderate amounts of meat. Farmers in NSW are fighting against compulsory acquisition notices for the HumeLink transmission line project. Despite significant project changes and increased costs from $1.35 billion to nearly $5 billion, Transgrid has not reassessed the project. The HumeLink Alliance, representing affected landholders, argues for the transmission lines to be undergrounded due to cost blowouts and reduced transfer capacity. The NSW Farmers Association criticises the planning system for dismissing community impacts and calls for a reassessment, emphasising that the project's feasibility should consider undergrounding as a viable option. Landcare is interested in this issue because it affects land use and environmental management, which are core concerns for the organisation, along with supporting farmers and community resilience. Key questions arise from this article: 1. Could undergrounding transmission lines minimise environmental disruption and support sustainable land management practices while delivering energy in a cost-effective way? 2.
