In recent years, vulnerable legacy enterprise networks have migrated to full cloud solutions to improve security, scalability, and functionality. However, this shift has often come at the cost of data sovereignty and data lifecycle ownership. I am confident that, eventually, we will need to consider a mix of data sovereignty solutions and offshore computer processing. A likely return to edge computing, which emphasises local data storage and enhanced protection, is on the horizon. I look forward to helping our customers diversify their computing storage and processing capabilities by shifting from cloud computing to edge computing. Let’s see how this plays out!

All over the globe, governments recognize the AI arms race is on. Specifically there's a growing conversation about the long term economic and security importance of developing "sovereign artificial intelligence (AI)". In Australia there is a lag in AI research and development. Here's a thought-provoking question: Should Australia invest taxpayer dollars into solar panel manufacturing, or should we focus on cultivating an industry capable of powering the manufacturing of intelligence for the 4th Industrial Revolution? A report from the CSIRO highlights that Australia is behind in creating foundational AI models, such as those used by OpenAI's ChatGPT, with the majority being developed overseas. This gap could affect Australia's ability to use AI to boost productivity and strengthen the economy. Professor Anton van den Hengel from the University of Adelaide points out that AI could significantly enhance efficiency in industries, a process that could span the next two decades. He emphasizes the importance of sovereign AI in capitalizing on economic opportunities that AI can provide, including applications not yet imagined. The issue also extends to education and infrastructure. For instance, using AI models developed abroad might compromise Australian values or priorities and could pose security and cultural risks. Cal Wilson from Crikey has surfaced an interesting 40 page report from AWS and ASIC on an AI proof of concept conducted at the start of 2024. It seems like a well-designed and run proof of concept (PoC), given it was for just five weeks, but unfortunately did not show very good results for AI. Some key quotes: "The final assessment results of the PoC showed that out of a maximum of 75 points, the aggregated human summaries scored 61 (81%) and the aggregated Gen AI summaries scored 35 (47%)." "ASIC assessors generally agreed that AI outputs could potentially create more work if used (in current state), due to the need to fact check outputs, or because the original source material actually presented information better. The assessments showed that one of the most significant issues with the model was its limited ability to pick-up the nuance or context required to analyse submissions." However, the results are already out of date. The Llama2-70B model that was used in the PoC was superceded by Llama 3 when that was released in April. Also, the PoC used a traditional RAG approach, which has already fallen out of favour compared to graph database RAG approaches. This points to the rapidly moving landscape of what is considered AI best practice, and makes it difficult to use the results to make a recommendation, other than: be prepared for any AI implementation today to likely be out of date in six months.
