Medcan Australia
Welcome to episode 5 of ‘Inside Medcan: Australia’s Largest Indoor Cannabis Farm’! It’s no understatement to say that the transition from a vegetative plant into a flowering plant is one of the biggest changes in the plant’s lifecycle. It’s a complex process that incorporates a lot of different variables to ensure we can cultivate world-class plants. But at its core, it requires a total change in environmental conditions. To achieve this, Medcan follows a specific methodology. In the flowering room, we switch to a 12-hour light and 12-hour dark cycle. The reason we do this is to mimic the change from summer to winter. This results in cooler conditions, which are conducive for optimal flowering. Coupled with this, we leverage several advanced features, including a vertical air system, drip irrigation, and ‘bugs for bugs’. It’s this combination of state-of-the-art tech and nature working in harmony that sets Medcan apart. In our next episode, we look at late-stage bud development. Be the first to know when it launches by following our page.

Australian Dairy Farmers Demand Subsidies to Secure Industry’s Future Australia — Australian dairy farmers are at a breaking point. Mounting operational costs, erratic climate conditions, and the surge in popularity of plant-based alternatives have plunged the industry into uncertainty. Unlike their counterparts in the United States and Europe, Australian dairy farmers operate with minimal or no government subsidies—a disparity they say is threatening their survival. At the Australian Meat Industry Council, we stand firm in our belief that certain animal rights groups, the "Anti-Ag Agenda," are imposing a fringe ideology on everyday Australians, with little regard for the mental health crisis their actions may cause in rural and regional areas. These groups prioritize their agenda over the well-being of our communities. Despite demanding a seat at the table for consultations on animal welfare standards, these activists do not seek to enhance welfare outcomes. Instead, their primary goal is to permanently shut down animal-based food production. It is crucial to differentiate genuine stakeholders, like RSPCA Australia, from those with ulterior motives. #AnimalAgriculture #AnimalWelfare #RuralAustralia Murray Watt Ed Husic MP Anthony Albanese Susan McDonald The Hon. Forward Fooding
🇦🇺🌾 Agtech startup enters the aquaculture sector. Food waste climate tech startup GOTERRA partners with aquaculture feed supplier Skretting Australia to expand into the aquaculture food supply business. Founded in 2016, Goterra uses black soldier fly larvae to recycle food waste into high-value protein and fertilizer through modular maggot-based robotic systems. This process diverts waste from landfills and significantly reduces carbon emissions by 97%. Goterra's CEO and founder, Olympia Yarger, highlighted the partnership's potential to enhance the company's waste mitigation technologies while supporting sustainable seafood production in Australia. By working with Skretting Australia, Goterra aims to help the company achieve its ESG targets and promote a circular economy. Rhys Hauler, Skretting Australia's marketing manager, noted the potential of Goterra’s insect meals to provide a low-cost, low-footprint protein source that maintains the nutritional quality of seafood. Goterra sees this collaboration as a critical step in scaling its impact and further integrating its technology into the agricultural sector. 😧 You are reading that right...Livestock is considered the 2nd-largest contributor to global emissions after fossil fuels. 🐄 And you are also right...going plant based and having dramatically less cows would be a great way to solve this problem.... But the reality is...it's not only not happening fast enough, but we are trending in the wrong direction with more cows each year than the last now to over 1.5B. I've spent 6 years working on this problem and our team has found a critical approach to...cue the jokes...cow burps. Yes, ~90% of the methane is in the burps. With Ruminant BioTech, we have the potential to address multiple percentage points of global emissions.

Australian farmland has seen a decade of exceptional growth, with farm prices growing at 11.6% CAGR. The latest Rural Bank Farmland Values (2023) report suggests a slowdown in price increases in 2023, yet 2023 still saw a 5.15% income return and a 6% capital gain to farmers. We see these as a retreat to the long-term average returns from farming of 11%-12% per annum. With farm price growth slowing to more tradition levels – now is a good time to consider agricultural private credit as an alternative to traditional land ownership, offering similar returns to the long-term average without the operating risks.
