Calling all climate-concerned professionals! It’s official: there has never been a better time to push for sustainability in your workplace. Deloitte's latest 2024 CxO Sustainability Report reveals that Australian executives have the world’s most positive outlook about overcoming the climate crisis. And the majority actually view climate action (and investment) as an opportunity, rather than a cost. Every surveyed Australian executive agreed their company can continue to grow while reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while 91% agreed the world can achieve global economic growth while also reaching climate change goals (up from 79% last year). Deloitte's Joanne Gorton says that with stakeholders (including employees!) increasingly expecting action on climate and sustainability, going that one step further can drive competitive advantage. "The regulatory drum is beating. In this new era of global standards, sustainability and climate-related initiatives are no longer optional. Businesses need to gear up and integrate these considerations into business models and strategy, risk and financial planning and reporting." So. Are you aware of the new changes to reporting requirements for NFP? From the 2023–24 income year onward, not-for-profits (NFPs) with an active Australian business number (ABN) must lodge an annual NFP self-review return to access income tax exemptions. The annual reporting aims to assure the community that only eligible not-for-profits access an income tax exemption. Government entities or charities registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) and taxable NFP entities are exempt from the annual self-review requirement. NFPs that do not fall under the above categories will need to submit a yearly NFP self-review return through their business portal or the registered tax agents' service. Lessons from Qantas: Governance Must Respond to Stakeholder Expectations The Qantas board report has highlighted several actionable governance lessons that can benefit other boards facing similar challenges: 1 - Enhanced Stakeholder Engagement – Boards need to be well-informed on customer and employee metrics to preempt crises and guide better decision-making. 2 - Remuneration Reforms – Boards should align executive incentives with long-term performance to foster trust and align stakeholder interests; short term profit or share price are not enough. 3 - Stricter Oversight on Major Decisions – Involving the board in high-impact decisions—especially around reputational risks—strengthens accountability and transparency and avoids myopic analysis based on only executive perspectives. Directors are supposed to be independent for very good reasons. By proactively addressing these 3 areas, all boards can create robust frameworks that safeguard and elevate the long term best interests of our companies. We might not end up on the front page of national newspapers; but that doesn't mean we can afford to fall into bad governance habits.
