Day 2 - Im documenting the journal of building an eCom brand from $0-10k per month in 120 days so you can learn from my wins and losses! We’ve spent $130,000 on this ad, it has generated over $400,000 in sales... and it’s been running for over 1 year. It’s not a net new concept. It’s a variation we created out of a previous winner in the ad account. Traditional UGC ads were not working for this account, but we saw that people engaged with videos showing what’s inside the book. The actual pages. So we asked the client to ship the book to our creative strategist. She filmed the video herself. She made sure we had an engaging hook - a zoom-out with close to a 40% hook-rate. The message of the hook perfectly describes the transformation people can achieve after going through the book - “growth”. The video is shot near a big window for the perfect lighting. The call-to-action at the end contributed to a 12% click-to-purchase ratio… which is something we don’t see that frequently. The ad also has over 20,000 likes & comments so I definitely see it working for at least another 6 months.

Some brutally honest advice for brands hesitant to use UGC: Do you remember Zagg, Quiksilver or eToys? Me neither. Because those brands were forgettable. They didn’t use creators to build trust in their marketing strategy and the world moved on. If you are NOT doing $20-30M+, most of your decisions will probably not have as much negative impact as you think. You don’t have this massive public image to uphold or an HR department breathing down your neck. What’s the worst that could happen? Even “bad press” or one bad video blows over in a couple days. (E.g. Shein, Amazon, Zara) The upsides usually outweigh the downside. OBVIOUSLY there’s nuance here, make smart business decisions and don’t take huge swing-for-the-fences risks. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. The usual. BUT, with something as risk-free as a UGC strategy, the “risk” is likely in your head. One of the upsides of UGC is that it’s content FEELS like someone just made it to make it. It’s not like watching an ad on TV that’s clearly put there by the company. If you run a train wreck of an ad, it’ll have WAY more of a negative effect than if a random influencer posted a video using your product. For example, recently, Huda Beauty released a new line of makeup that got a bad review from Mikayla Nogueira (a pretty big influencer in the beauty space)… A bunch of other creators started stitching Mikayla’s video with their reviews of Huda’s products which were the exact opposite. Because when a UGC creator puts something together, it feels more organic. People feel comfortable engaging because they know that ONE creator doesn’t represent the band. Even if someone DOES make a colossal mistake, it's not going to destroy the brand's reputation. If Bud Light can reel their audience back in, you’ll be fine. Make good products, advertise the heck out of them, and always stay one step ahead. Don’t be afraid to keep up with the times just because something is new.

🌎🌍🌏 If you're expanding into the US (or into a bigger, international market) from Aus or NZ, here’s quick 3 tips for Google Ads: 1️⃣ Start with only one test area. i.e. don’t target the whole country. ↳ Otherwise you’ll need to 10x your current budget at the bare minimum as it will be depleted instantly with minimal results and not enough data for Google’s algorithms to optimise 2️⃣ Remember to localise your ad copy, landing pages etc ↳ It’s easy to forget basic even small things like changing the “s” to a “z”, among many others (e.g. localise -> localize) 3️⃣ Create a new, separate ads account  ↳ Not essential, but definitely recommended. Reduces complexities like reviewing metrics, adjusting strategy, billing in USD etc. Make sure to link it back to your original account using a MCC

The main feedback I get from ppl re google ads is; "I want to try it but cant afford to spend $20-$30k to find out if it works" I hear you! I really really do. That is why I am intro-ing ( is that a word? introducing is too formal ...) a google ads "test-drive" 🏎️ package. 5 learnings from my interview with Seb Evans this week 1. Rethink your model from a marketers perspective. Winedrops works because they created an acquisition-led product: waitlist, which is cheap for lead gen -> scarcity acceptance -> membership that's paywalled. Optimise until profitable. Everything else is free LTV 2. You don't need an app to get going – use WhatsApp Winedrops was built on WhatsApp long before it became an app. You do NOT need an app. 3. Identify 'grey markets' for business ideas Those with high fluctuations in retail prices. 'Your margin is my opportunity' 4. If CPA is going up and retention goes down, it's likely a sign of business failure This was one we saw at Wine List too. 5. Sell stuff people want affordably Feels like a no brainer, but how many businesses are built on a premium model with higher acquisition costs and far tighter economics.

It’s wild how effective UGC ads have been over the last 12 months. They’re the best performing content type in almost every account we manage. For example, this one piece of content cost about $1200 all in to create. We put $86,761 of spend behind it. To date, it's given us back $889,982 in revenue. From ONE video. Gone are the days of paying your favourite Love Islander £10k for a story that has zero business impact. The quality of the creative is one of the single biggest drivers for paid social success, and your customers want to see people that look and sound just like them. My advice for anyone wanting to smash BFCM this year: - Find epic creators that fit your niche - Tell them what you want to achieve - Pay them - Let them do their thing in their own unique style. Yes, some pieces might not land. That's part of the game, and it’s exactly why we script, build & edit the videos in a modular format so we can stitch various hooks & assets together to find the best performing combinations. But when you land on a few that do, you can scale them to the moon. “This is really where you value-add, Cass”, the Head of Marketing of Lendela told me one day. We were operating as Lendela’s fractional marketing team, executing end-to-end partnerships work for them up until the contract signing stage, before we handed over the partnerships for them to execute. In 2 months, we managed to help secure 3 affiliates for Lendela. Today, we offer 4 key areas of expertise if we operate as businesses’ fractional marketing team - strategy, partnerships, online marketing campaigns and influencer marketing. What many don’t know is that I personally execute and drive all partnerships efforts on behalf of all our clients. As a result, these are my observations from partnership marketing: 📍 It ALMOST ALWAYS works. I have always leveraged partnerships to drive awareness and acquisition, regardless of where I was working or whether it was for a B2B or B2C business. 📍 There is demand. 8 out of 10 businesses I speak to are intrigued by the work we do on the partnerships front because it can contribute to organic growth, boost branding, and is often a cost-efficient way of acquiring new users. Scaling a trade business from $1m/year to $4m/year isn't hard if you're in Sydney. It looks like this: 1) High-converting website (meaning a lot of website ad traffic becomes quote requests because you look trustworthy) 2) A semi-decent sales process (your estimator can bang out 5-10 quotes a day) 3) A good team that can finish the job at a high-quality standard Very simple & achievable. Most business owners can achieve this but don't. Why? Well simple answer to that is ask yourself why YOU haven't tried (only if you're not at $4m+ yet) Going from $4m -> $10m however... Different ballgame there.
