The latest Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey shows income inequality is the highest in more than 20 years.   Incomes for the top 10% of Australians grew faster than for middle-income earners while incomes for the lowest paid declined relative to the rest of the population. Single older women have been hit the hardest.  -- St Vincent de Paul Society calls for greater tax relief and support for people on low incomes. Housing is the answer to homelessness. Every day we see the human face of housing stress and homelessness behind the statistics. Being homeless or facing housing stress is a denial of dignity and limits people’s life potential.   — We help people by providing housing and accommodation options in each state and territory. We advocate with government for improved housing accessibility. The issue of rental affordability cuts right across the community, with many renters of all ages and circumstances facing high costs and a lack of available rental properties. -- 30% of low-income households, or 2.65 million people, are now in the private rental market, with two- thirds of them experiencing rental stress. Some 170,000 households are surviving on less than $250 per week after paying rent.
