We're excited to welcome the highly experienced Dr Jamie Phillips as a new Medical Officer at Updoc! As a former Surgeon Commander and Royal Navy Commando in the UK Armed Forces, and Lieutenant Colonel in the Australian Army, Dr Jamie is no stranger to high pressure environments where quality leadership is required to ensure healthcare can be delivered when people need it the most. Dr Jamie is comfortable with the spotlight too - he was the Chief Medical Officer on "Special Forces: The World's Toughest Test", needing to be on-demand at all times for a diverse range of healthcare needs under a different kind of pressure. More recently, Dr Jamie has been serving as Sonder's Medical Director, whereby him and the team have been leading the development of a range of high quality, 24/7 care initiatives. If that wasn't enough, he also works regularly as a Senior Medical Officer in Emergency Medicine. Dr Jamie understands the importance of enabling accessible, on-demand care through the use of technology, and we're excited to be bringing him onto the team as we continue to build the future of healthcare.

Healthcare access is a major issue globally. Stefi, one of our newly minted CX specialists, recently spent time in San Francisco and experienced this firsthand. She's helping to improve the healthcare experience for hundreds of thousands of Australians at Updoc.

I stayed in the Tenderloin for 4 weeks, and here’s why. The US has one of the lowest life expectancies among high-income countries and one of the highest rates of avoidable deaths. NHIS found that more than 1 in 4 adults (28%) in the US reported delaying or not getting healthcare due to cost and financial constraints. Physical and mental health issues can directly limit a person's ability to participate in activities, work, maintain relationships, and experience overall happiness. While I was walking the streets of San Francisco, it was disheartening to see so much avoidable poverty. The US healthcare system is infamous for its inefficiencies, sky-high costs, and inaccessibility. Meanwhile, Silicon Valley operates at a speed unlike anywhere else, rapidly iterating on innovations that shape the world. Over a 4 week period, I was working two jobs at once… - Growth @ Fluid, a VR startup in Silicon Valley - Customer Experience @ Updoc, an Australian healthtech company revolutionising telehealth I learnt one of the cardinal rules of growth hacking is that you must not move into the high-tempo growth experimentation push until you know your product is a must-have and to whom it is a must-have. At Updoc, we've helped hundreds of thousands of Australians access better healthcare through intelligently engineered technology. I've witnessed first-hand how life-changing accessible healthcare can be. Apathy is the thing that kills most startups. This experience has deepened my conviction in accessible healthcare and reinforced my passion for building technology that meaningfully improves people’s lives, so I’m excited to have joined Updoc full-time! Thanks to UQ Ventures and Updoc for supporting this important experience. Great to see so many UQ alumni at Updoc—thanks to UQ Ventures for sparking so many entrepreneurial journeys. ✨

Healthcare accessibility impacts people globally from all walks of life. Updoc is doing all that we can to improve health outcomes for all people. We're proud to be sponsoring Darcy Douglas, one of our Associate Product Managers, in his effort to make a tangible impact on healthcare in Africa.

I quit my job to build B2B SaaS in Africa. The maternal mortality rate in sub-Saharan Africa is around 100 times what it is in Australia. Childbirth can cause fistula, a tearing during labour that creates a hole between the birth canal and bladder or rectum, causing constant leaking of urine or faeces. In Australia, fistula is effectively eradicated. In Africa, fistula can mean humiliation and rejection from employment, communities and family. The Barbara May Foundation operates maternity hospitals across East Africa fighting these preventable tragedies. For the next six weeks, Nathan Spencer, Patrick Bell and I will be:  - Living at their largest hospital — which delivers 4000 babies per year - Upgrading their patient management system - Building systems for SMS patient reminders Thanks to the Blackbird Foundation and Updoc for sponsoring this important project. At Updoc, we've helped hundreds of thousands of Australians access better healthcare through intelligently engineered technology. I've learned a lot at Updoc about how to build technology that enables convenient and accessible healthcare, and how life-changing that can be. I'm bringing these learnings to Africa, helping make lifesaving healthcare more accessible to those most in need. This experience has deepened my conviction in Updoc's mission, so I'm excited to announce that I'm returning full-time once this project is done. We're actively hiring for a range of roles, as well as looking for more doctors to join the platform — links below. --- 🙏 One quick favour: if you enjoyed this post, give it some love.

Great to wake up and see updoc in the The Australian Financial Review this morning, celebrating our Customer Champions win. I had a chat with Simon Evans about all things healthcare access, and although I'm not exactly sure I'd equate us to Netflix, it's great to read about how we're making healthcare easier for people. https://lnkd.in/gCaZnQ_5
