Our Chief Impact Officer Sarah Morse made a great contribution last week at the Office of the NSW Anti-slavery Commissioner two-day event on how #healthcare professionals can collaborate together in the global fight against #modernslavery and #humantrafficking. Having extensive experience of how things work in hospitals, Sarah provided important insight into how best to inform and equip front line health professionals on how to identify and respond to potential cases of slavery.
The power of health care to address modern slavery Healthcare workers are a powerful force in the fight against modern slavery. For people living in modern slavery, an interaction with a healthcare provider could be the first step on their journey to freedom and recovery. As part of OASC’s It’s Healthy to Fight Modern Slavery initiative, we were thrilled to host a 2-day workshop for 45 professionals from healthcare providers, anti-slavery organisations, and service providers on 17-18 September. Co-facilitated with internationally renowned experts from HEAL Trafficking – Dr Amanda M Stylianou, PhD, LCSW, CEO, and Dr Hanni Stoklosa, MD, MPH, Chief Medical Officer – the workshop provided an opportunity for participants to learn from global best practice, hear from lived experience experts, and collaborate on improving the NSW healthcare system’s response to modern slavery. Participants also contributed to the development of an action plan for the It’s Healthy to Fight Modern Slavery #communityofpurpose. This multi-disciplinary group of healthcare practitioners, community service providers, academics, people with lived expertise, and independent experts will work together to help equip frontline healthcare workers to be able to identify and support people experiencing exploitation.
