The Genesis program exists to support the most promising startups through mentoring from experts and an award of $30,000

About us

Since launching in 2008, Genesis has supported more than 1,000 University of Sydney alumni, students and staff to accelerate their commercial and social enterprises. At the beginning of 2020, there were around 200 startups actively engaged in the Genesis program. Each semester, we accept the best startups from across the university community. Successful startup teams gain one-on-one access to industry mentors and advisors, a database of entrepreneurship resources, networking events and media exposure. The Genesis program culminates in the Finale, where finalist teams present their progress for the chance to receive $25,000 equity-free funding and a range of bespoke coaching and support opportunities.

For Genesis C35 applicants whom we were unable to accept this cohort, we’d like to share a prime example of the playing field of company builders with early traction and MVPs whom we accepted: Gather If you’re a little bit early for us, we highly recommend the pre-accelerator & accelerator programs at our sister program INCUBATE, who shaped several other companies we accepted incl. AIPD, Bookish & METASORB

    Co-Founder @ Gather | Board @ Young Change Agents

"No one wants to pay for a personal finance app." That’s what everyone told us when we started working on Gather. But after nearly a decade of building money apps at Finder, we’d seen the gaps firsthand – where existing tools worked, and where they fell short. Was what they said really true? We wanted to find out for ourselves. So last year we set out to validate a simple theory: that there’s a group of people who care about building lasting wealth and that they want simple, powerful, and purpose-built tools for their journey. Not just some janky spreadsheets that never add up. We built all year, working closely with our first believers to create something that really works for them. While we were still proving that Gather deserved to exist, we kept our day jobs and built on the side. Then came December. We launched Gather on the App Store – and welcomed our first paying customers. And now, I'm excited to share that after an incredible 7 years at Finder, I’m going all in on Gather full-time, alongside Peter. To everyone at Finder who I've had the wonderful opportunity to work with – Thank you. There are too many folks to name, so I’m not even going to try. You know who you are. I’ve learned so much from you. The next chapter is 100% Gather. If you're serious about building wealth purposefully with tools designed for the job, let’s talk.

  • For any of our Genesis deep tech startups we highly recommend the Foundry program run by Genesis mentor Saron Berhane at Blackbird (who is somehow generously mentoring Genesis in parallel to running Foundry!)
