Defence companies are accelerating plans to develop low-cost, high-energy laser weapons as militaries around the world look for ways to counter cheap new missile threats such as drones. Some of the world’s best-known contractors, including QinetiQ are investing heavily in the cutting-edge technology — long regarded as more science fiction than reality. The Financial Times reports on the “race to deploy” high-energy laser weapons as governments look for "cost-effective ways to tackle the proliferation of cheap drones and missiles”. We have officially presented the Minister for Defence, The Hon Richard Marles MP with an incredible piece of creativity and symbolism – the Army Makerspace “Snow Globe”. Commissioned by the Luke Gosling OAM MP, the globe encapsulates the core mission of the Army Makerspace program: to enhance the cognitive abilities of Australian Army personnel through creative, non-traditional thinking and the development of ‘MakerSkills’ in the Makerspace facility. Key elements of the globe include: - Jumping Crocodile – A Northern Territory icon representing the power of culture. - Square Jar – Symbolising “thinking outside the box.” - Germinating Seed – Representing the growth of experience from a curious mind - Two Soldiers – One holding a question and an idea, the other climbing the Problem-Solving Ladder. - The LID ((current slang for a new soldier) – Torn open to signify breaking free from stereotypes that hinder innovation. - Makerspace M Shield – Protecting the LID from the crocodile’s bite, symbolising resilience, defiance of cultural norms, and providing a platform for creativity to accelerate modernisation. This unique piece embodies the spirit of the Makerspace initiative — offering a pathway for soldiers to think differently, innovate, and bring fresh ideas to the forefront. Congratulations to Dan Deleur, new job title - Snow Globe Maker, QinetiQ Australia, Jazz Kastaniotis, MakerSpace and Innovation Program Manager and our partners BMNT, AxisAgile, AltoEducation and Deakin University for delivering a world leading program. #WeAreQinetiQ #ArmyMakerspace #AcceleratingCapability #Innovation #AusDef

Yesterday marked the official opening of QinetiQ Laboratories (QLabs) in Adelaide, South Australia, inaugurated by Australia's Chief Defence Scientist, Tanya Monro AC. Joined by Mr Tony Zappia MP, Federal Member for Makin, this first-of-its-kind facility marks a significant advancement in Australia's defence technology infrastructure. QLabs is designed to bolster our nation’s sovereign defence capabilities, offering cutting-edge software engineering and rapid prototyping for some of the world's most advanced defence technologies. The new facility will support several key programs including the Directed Energy Program in partnership with the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG). This partnership aims to support the establishment and commercialisation of a High Energy Laser manufacturing capability in Australia. Thank you to our people and partners who have made QLabs a reality. We look forward to delivering innovative solutions that meet the needs of the Australian Defence Force to accelerate capability to the frontline. Recent conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East have highlighted the need for more cost-effective air defence solutions. Enter Laser Directed Energy Weapons (LDEW), a game-changing technology that shifts the balance in favour of defenders. QinetiQ Australia, alongside Australia's Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), is pioneering a sovereign LDEW capability for Australia. This initiative, supported by a $12.9 million contract, is a testament to international collaboration and aims to deliver a trial system by 2025. Today, as we commemorate Remembrance Day, we pause to reflect on the courage and sacrifices of those who have served in our armed forces. Across the countries we operate, known by various names like Armistice Day, Veterans' Day, or Volkstrauertag (National Day of Mourning), this day unites us in honouring our veterans, reservists, and their families. At QinetiQ Australia, we deeply value the contributions of those who have served and continue to serve. Their commitment and bravery are aligned with our core purpose of advancing security and resilience. To all the veterans and armed forces family members within QinetiQ Australia, your service is invaluable, and today, we express our deepest gratitude. #RemembranceDay

We recently played a valued role supporting Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) in the Autonomous Warrior 2024 exercise in Jervis Bay. Autonomous Warrior is a key event for Robotic and Autonomous Systems experimentation, paving the way for future innovations in maritime defence. In partnership with Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) and Forcys Australia, our team delivered a rapidly deployable underwater tracking range system for independent assessment of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles. It was a unique opportunity to demonstrate our Test and Evaluation credentials and strengthen partnerships with defence and industry. This success was made possible by our dedicated teams from across QinetiQ Australia, QinetiQ and QinetiQ US. #WeAreQinetiQ #Innovation #TestAndEvaluation #AcceleratingCapability

In The Australian Strategic Policy Institute The Strategist, Gary Stewart, Chief Executive Australia Sector, QinetiQ Australia explores how the AUKUS partnership can't just aim for interoperability—it requires true interchangeability. This means components and systems from different nations can be easily swapped and integrated, enhancing collective defence capabilities. To achieve this, our defence industrial bases must evolve into a seamless ecosystem. At QinetiQ Australia, we're leading initiatives like Team TECSA to meet these demands. But we can't do it alone; collaboration across governments, universities, and industry is crucial. Learn more about this strategic imperative here: https://lnkd.in/gPdzXpvC #AUKUS #DefenceInnovation #Collaboration
