Crime Stoppers Victoria and Victoria Police are cracking down on retail crime with their ‘Retail Crime Costs Us All’ campaign. The National Retail Association is proud to support the launch this campaign which will see CCTV footage released of some of the state’s worst retail crime repeat offenders, appealing for community information. In addition to stealing goods, retail crime offenders often come prepared for confrontation, with increased reports of carrying weapons. Assaults linked to theft in retail settings have risen by 12.3% year on year, with assaults on females in a retail setting rising by 65.7% in 2024, highlighting the growing danger faced by frontline workers. Victorians can play a crucial role in assisting police by providing any information about offenders, including their names, locations they frequent, licence plate details, any information about stolen goods including where they are being held, or information about recipients of stolen goods. As Cyclone Alfred and heavy rainfall continues to threaten Queensland and Northern New South Wales, retailers have put preparations in place to ensure the safety of their teams, customers and stores. The intensity of the weather event has meant that many stores in affected areas are now closed until conditions change and it is safe to reopen. Where it is safe to do so, some essential retail stores remain open though many retailers are reporting lower staff numbers given the warnings currently in place. The Australian Retailers Association (ARA) and National Retail Association (NRA) are calling on continued community patience and understanding towards retail workers who are operating in an extremely high-pressure situation. As Cyclone Alfred approaches the southeast Queensland coast, the National Retail Association urges all retailers to take immediate action to safeguard employees and prepare for potential business disruptions. Cyclone Alfred has intensified to a Category 2 system and is expected to make landfall between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast late on Thursday, 6 March, bringing destructive winds and heavy rainfall. Immediate Actions and Key Considerations for Employers: • Review your emergency response plan and ensure employees are familiar with evacuation procedures. • Communicate with staff about business continuity plans and their leave entitlements. • Secure your workplace and essential records to minimise potential damage. • Monitor official weather warnings and stay informed about government assistance options. Staff Leave Entitlements: • Sick/Carer’s Leave: Employees (excluding casuals) may be entitled to paid sick or carer’s leave under the Fair Work Act if they are directly affected by the cyclone. This includes situations where an employee is injured or needs to care for a family member due to school or childcare closures. • Community Service Leave: Employees who are members of recognised emergency management organisations may be entitled to unpaid leave if they are called to assist with cyclone response efforts. Business Closures and Stand Downs If your business is forced to close temporarily due to cyclone damage, power outages, or other impacts: • You may offer employees the option to take accrued paid leave. • In some cases, employers may be able to stand down employees where work is unavailable due to a natural disaster beyond their control. Employers are not required to pay employees during a stand-down but may choose to do so. If you need further advice on lawful stand downs under the Fair Work Act, please call our Workplace Relations hotline on 1800 RETAIL (738 245) for advice specific to your circumstances. The safety of your staff is paramount. Please take all necessary precautions. For guidance, call the National Retail Association team on 1800 RETAIL (738 245).
