🚨 People with disabilities are disproportionately affected by disasters like Cyclone Alfred Flooding in Southeast QLD & Northern NSW is devastating communities—especially those already vulnerable. Research shows that people with disabilities face greater disruption in accessing essentials, support, and healthcare after floods, with a higher risk of PTSD long after the waters recede. Yet, targeted research and policies remain scarce. AHEAD Chief Investigator Dr Jodie Bailie has just published an article in Conversation exploring the health impacts of floods: 📖 Read more in Conversation: https://lnkd.in/gb9PBEJt 📄 Related research paper on BMJ Open: https://lnkd.in/gWYDTqKN #CycloneAlfred #DisabilityInclusion #DisasterResponse #ClimateJustice #AHEAD

Thanks for sharing, Eye2Gene! We're extremely proud of this work, highlighting the challenges that people living with inherited retinal diseases face beyond vision loss, including: 🔎 Navigating the journey of diagnosis and adapting to vision changes 🔎 Unique social challenges created by the invisible nature of vision loss 🔎 Coping with an unpredictable future with progressive vision loss This work really impacted me, opening my eyes to the different challenges faced by those living with vision loss. It inspires me to keep building our genomics research program to drive discovery and treatments for IRDs, but beyond that, also how important it is that we raise awareness and build stronger community support networks. We all have a role to play in supporting people with hidden disabilities. We're so grateful to our partners at Retina Australia and Blind Citizens Australia, funding by Melbourne Disability Institute supporting this work, and especially our participants who shared their perspectives. 201 Grattan Street, Carlton – also known as Melbourne Social Equity Institute's former office – is now a student canteen offering hot and cold meals for $5. Student food insecurity is a major issue in Australia. Estimates suggest that between a quarter and two-thirds of university students do not have sufficient or stable access to affordable, nutritious and culturally appropriate food. It's a topic that the Talking Hunger project team of Jane Dyson, Charlene Edwards, Sara Guest, Craig Jeffrey and Gyorgy Scrinis have been working on for the past five years.
