📢University libraries across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand voice serious concerns over ProQuest's recently announced changes to book sales models. The Council of Australasian University Librarians (CAUL) has released a statement addressing ProQuest's decision to discontinue demand-driven and evidence-based acquisition models while phasing out perpetual eBook and print purchasing in favour of subscription-only eBook packages. Key concerns include: ➡️Elimination of perpetual ownership, compromising long-term access to scholarly materials ➡️Dismantling of evidence-based and demand-driven acquisition programs ➡️Lack of pricing transparency ➡️Operational disruptions due to abrupt implementation timelines ➡️Insufficient consultation with university libraries ➡️Prioritisation of profit over customer needs These changes will significantly impact our ability to build relevant, inclusive, and responsive scholarly collections for our university communities. The Council of Australasian University Librarians calls on ProQuest to reconsider these plans and engage directly with stakeholders to develop a more collaborative and sustainable solution that preserves libraries' rights to build and maintain permanent collections. Today, CAUL bids farewell to Roxanne Missingham OAM, who is retiring after a distinguished career as University Librarian and Chief Scholarly Information Officer at ANU. Since 2012, Roxanne has led transformative initiatives, including the flourishing of ANU Press and digitising the ANU Theses Collection, profoundly impacting open access publishing and research visibility. Roxanne’s contributions to CAUL, especially in copyright, have been invaluable. We thank her for her leadership, dedication, and collegiality. Congratulations, Roxanne, on an incredible career.
