  • A funding crisis is threatening to deprive millions of people of vital aid, including vulnerable Syrians. Without immediate support, up to 75,000 displaced Syrians will go without emergency shelter, and 1.5 million people will be deprived of survival essentials such as blankets, winter clothing and other basic supplies. Please don’t forget the people of Syria.

  • This year marks 50 years since the first Vietnamese refugees fled in the aftermath of the Vietnam War and found a new home in Australia. Fair Work Commissioner and former Vietnamese refugee Oanh Thi Tran fled her home in Vietnam as a child on her father’s fishing boat. Growing up, she was motivated to pursue a career in industrial law after witnessing the struggles refugees faced while working in Australia, including her own parents. Oanh’s story is just one of many stories of Vietnamese refugees making a positive impact on Australian society. Over the last 50 years, Vietnamese refugees have enriched their new home with their experience, rich culture and more. • To mark the International Day of Women Judges, we’re celebrating the strength and resilience of Judge Farah Altaf Atahee, who fled her home in Afghanistan and now lives in Australia. Before she was forced to flee in 2021, Judge Farah travelled the country, educating other judges about legislation that criminalised violence against women and sentenced many members of the Taliban to prison for kidnapping and bombing. “Getting this higher responsibility as a judge made me confident and determined to prove that women can do the same as men. It also made my mother very proud, and she encouraged me,” she said. Take some time to read her remarkable story today: https://lnkd.in/gJNZxj7d

  • In the first six months of 2024, 630,000 people were supported by UNHCR’s programs addressing violence against women and girls. Women and girls who have been forced to flee must have access to essential services to ensure their safety, dignity and the support they need to rebuild their lives.

  • Every woman and girl deserves safety, dignity and equality, no matter where they come from. UNHCR is working to ensure displaced women have protection, education and opportunities to rebuild their lives. Together, we can help them not just survive but thrive.

  • From struggling to access education due to her statelessness to becoming a graduate and a protection intern at UNHCR, Nosizi is an example of what happens when stateless people are given recognition. Her story is an inspiration to everyone.

  • The expertise and dedication of women like Tendai are shaping humanitarian efforts worldwide, ensuring the protection and support of displaced and stateless people. These are some words of wisdom for those looking to build a career in the humanitarian space from Tendai Dopo, Senior Registration Assistant with UNHCR in Zambia. “I advise you to remain resilient despite the challenges. Your work will directly impact vulnerable communities, and your voice is crucial in creating inclusive solutions. Never stop learning, build a supportive network and take on leadership roles with confidence,” she said. Women like Tendai play a vital role in UNHCR’s work sheltering, protecting and safeguarding refugees and displaced people.

  • What does evacuation from the war in Ukraine look like? Communities near the front lines of the war face relentless drone attacks and bombardments. At a transit centre in Pavlohrad, close to the fighting in eastern Ukraine, UNHCR and partners are providing urgent aid, including clothing, hygiene kits and mental health support to those forced to flee.

  • Ukrainians have continued to show resilience and strength while enduring more than three years of full-scale war. These pictures capture the harsh reality of the invasion for civilians who have lost homes, livelihoods and, in some cases, loved ones. UNHCR remains dedicated to supporting displaced Ukrainians by repairing homes, providing safe shelter and distributing emergency cash for essentials like food, medicine and clothing.
