Updates

  • The Infrastructure Investment Objectives (IIO) Report is the central planning document guiding the NSW energy transformation by setting out a development pathway for the next 20 years and a tender plan for the next 10 years. The report is updated every two years, with the 2025 IIO Report expected to be published in the second half of the year. We recently held a webinar to share detail on a new modelling approach that will feature in the report, as well as how legislation updates will underpin the report design and timing. Watch the webinar, presented by our General Manager – System Planning, Reporting & Renewable Energy Zone Authorisation, Melanie Koerner. https://lnkd.in/gxps4Mhr

An important milestone has been reached for the Gentari Australia Maryvale Solar and Energy Storage project, with construction soon to commence.   The hybrid solar and battery project was awarded a Generation Long-Term Energy Supply Agreement (LTESA) under NSW Roadmap Tender Round 4 delivered by AEMO Services as the Consumer Trustee.   The project was selected for its ability to provide long-term financial benefits for NSW electricity consumers, and its ability to provide significant reliability contributions to the energy system.   Once operational, the project will deliver about 243 MW at peak operation with about 350 MWh of energy storage, with the battery able to dispatch energy even when the solar resource is not available.   Learn more about the projects supported through NSW Roadmap tenders: https://lnkd.in/ghpmeD8b

AEMO Services has delivered five tenders so far under the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap, helping secure investment in long duration storage, generation and firming infrastructure.   In our role as the Consumer Trustee, we design and undertake competitive tenders to recommend Long-Term Energy Supply Agreements (LTESAs), with these contracts helping support the market to bring forward investment in NSW electricity infrastructure.   We’ve published Market Briefing Notes on the outcomes of each NSW tender to provide insight into our decision-making and the attributes of successful bids.   Read the Market Briefing Notes for NSW Roadmap tenders: https://lnkd.in/gbuBJ7bQ

  • Our Executive General Manager Nevenka Codevelle joined a panel of industry experts at the International Hydropower Association (IHA) Pumped Storage: Powering Australia’s Energy Future event.   The event, which included insights from IHA President the Honourable Malcolm Turnbull and Minister for Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Heritage Penny Sharpe, highlighted pumped hydro as a valuable long-duration storage technology, helping to diversify and improve reliability of the energy system.   Through our competitive tenders under the NSW Roadmap, AEMO Services de-risks revenue by providing long-term underwriting support for generation and long duration storage projects and provides certainty for investment through infrastructure planning as outlined in our Infrastructure Investment Objectives (IIO) Report.   Our latest NSW Roadmap Tender demonstrates our purpose of bridging ambition and action to deliver the energy transition. Last week, we announced the first pumped hydro project to be provided underwriting support through a Roadmap tender – ACEN Australia’s Phoenix Pumped Hydro project – which, once operational, will deliver about 11,990 MWh storage capacity and put downwards pressure on wholesale electricity prices   Our thanks to Kim Curtain, Dennis Barnes, Anthony Garnaut, Andrew Patterson and Rebecca Ellis for a well-informed and valuable panel discussion.   More information on the outcomes of our latest tender is available on our website:

The Australian Government has opened consultation on design parameters for a proposed Western Australia Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) combined generation and dispatchable tender in 2025 under the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS). The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water is calling for input on WEM generation design parameters, eligibility and merit criteria and the approach to including hybrid projects. The tender would be the first under the CIS to underwrite renewable generation capacity in the WEM. Read more and lodge your submission by 1pm AEDT 31 March 2025:https://lnkd.in/g2CQf4wE

The Australian Government is consulting on its tender design for the Western Australia Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) under the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS). This CIS encourages new renewable energy projects by offering long-term underwriting support for projects: ☀️ renewable generation (like solar and wind) 🔋 dispatchable capacity (like battery storage). It’s a critical step toward achieving the Australian Government’s 82% renewable electricity target by 2030, adding 32 GW of clean energy capacity. Consultation is now open on the potential design parameters for a proposed CIS WEM tender, that for the first time includes renewable generation capacity. We’re looking for your input on: 📝 renewable generation design parameters for the WEM 📝 eligibility and merit criteria for renewable generation tenders 📝 approach to the inclusion of hybrid projects. Provide feedback by 31 March 2025. 👉 Learn more and contribute 🔗 https://brnw.ch/21wR0m4 Let’s work together to create a cleaner energy future! #RenewableEnergy #CapacityInvestmentScheme

  • AEMO Services is helping to bring forward investment in NSW’s future energy system through the delivery of tenders under the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap.    An important milestone has been reached for the Hydrostor Silver City Energy Storage Centre, which was one of five successful projects awarded a Long-Term Energy Supply Agreements by AEMO Services under Roadmap Tender Round 3.    Construction of the 200 MW long duration storage facility is set to begin later this year. Once operational, Silver City will provide benefits to electricity consumers in far-western NSW and beyond.   Learn more about our role as NSW Consumer Trustee:

Minister for Climate Change, Minister for Energy, Minister for the Environment and Minister for Heritage. Leader of the Government in the Upper House.

NSW has granted planning approval to turn an old mine site in Broken Hill into a compressed air energy storage system. It’ll boost the reliability of the energy grid right across NSW, and provide back-up supply to Far West NSW. This Hydrostor project is the first of its kind in Australia. How does it work? When demand for energy is low, it’ll use the excess power to compress air and store it in underground tanks. Then when demand is high, the compressed air will be released, heated and expanded through turbines to generate electricity. This is the 32nd renewable energy project approved by the Minns Labor Government - we’re delivering a reliable, affordable energy system that benefits communities and the economy.
