The latest Bitkom Cloud Study once again confirms the importance of cloud technology for the digitalization and thus ultimately the competitiveness of German companies. The demand for cloud services continues to rise unabated, driven in particular by the digitalization of internal processes as well as AI and cybersecurity. Interesting read in Computerwoche (German) on IT/OT convergence - one key aspect in this article: "According to IoT Analytics, the persistent hurdles include outdated OT systems, which often have lifecycles of more than 20 years. They are usually not compatible with modern IT tools and technologies, making them more difficult to integrate. Amidst a large number of presentations on AI topics, it was refreshing to see other equally important (or perhaps even more important) cloud topics discussed at AWS Zurich Summit last week. One of these topics was Observability and Monitoring, crucial for any Cloud Project new or existent. The presentation by Tobias Hölsch got into an overview of challenges, capabilities, trade-offs, and the expectations from AIOps. One aspect I particularly liked, was the presenter's emphasis on the concept of Observability, rather than solely focusing on Monitoring. While closely related, these concepts have distinct differences. Monitoring involves reviewing data collected from various systems and devices. In contrast, Observability builds upon this by analyzing the raw data to extract deeper insights, which can enhance operational decision-making and, when possible, enable proactive and automated responses. Through Monitoring, we can see that a problem exists, but through Observability we should be able to diagnose the problem. Furthermore, if we use AIOps, there may even be a possibility to automatically resolve some performance issues. Unsecure video conferences in the German Armed Forces The #metadata for several thousand #Bundeswehr video meetings were apparently freely accessible on the Internet. Since the URLs were all structured according to the same principle, they were particularly easy to combine. This made it possible for unauthorized persons to participate in meetings even without a password. The serious #security loophole has probably been closed in the meantime, but it once again shows the partly negligent behavior of institutions when it comes to #cybersecurity. This does not strengthen the citizens' trust in the capabilities of state institutions.
