State railway economics 🦕 #DeRail Hopefully, after this hopeless, for the market destructive, expensive and inefficient course for taxpayers, DB Cargo, which operates Europe-wide, will finally be used to transform the company into a normal commercially managed rail freight transport company. Rail transport customers, investors in rail transport companies and taxpayers all have an interest in good and healthy market forces in a Single European Railway Area. Now tackle the hopelessly failing rail infrastructure managers (not only in Germany, but also in the Netherlands, for example). The political-administrative shift must really be made to prevent derailment.

Congratulations to Spain for the victory in the UEFA EURO Championships! ⚽🚄 Germany has been buzzing during this month-long festival of football that was filled with passion, colors, and memories with 24 nations taking part. Let’s not forget the role of rail travel and the rail staff and volunteers who helped connect football fans to the 51 matches played across 10 German cities. Even players (not enough in my opinion) were connected via rail with some teams taking trains to games from their training camps. Here the Swiss won the “train-use championships” with five rail journeys in the tournament. Overall, the performance of Deutsche Bahn was very good given the high demand and challenging weather at times, with only three major delay incidents caused mainly by infrastructure issues. Most complaints were actually for regional or local tram services. Still, this shows how crucial the digitalization and renovation of the core network that Deutsche Bahn has initiated is to restrict this in the future. The same is true for local and regional networks where once again digitalization can limit disruption and quicken the service recovery from major incidents. The challenge for such major events is huge with Berlin alone having 1.9 million visitors for the Euros. Deutsche Bahn says six million passengers traveled on ICE and IC trains in the busy first two weeks of the tournament. It added 14 special daily trains for 10,000 additional seats and sold 180,000 fan travel tickets, 60,000 fan BahnCards, and 7,000 EURO Interrail passes before the tournament even began. The marketing drive from DB for the event was “One team. For the climate,” so maybe the environment joins Spain as another winner here! 🏆 #euro2024 #rail #sustainabletravel

The latest annual report from the German Council of Economic Experts, titled “Tackling Failures, Modernizing with Determination”, explicitly recommends the separation between the infrastructure manager, and railway operators.   The report highlights several key points, including: ➡️ Improving transparency in the use of public subsidies for rail infrastructure ➡️ Reducing inefficient prioritization, often driven by the internal interests of integrated groups, as seen in cases such as Deutsche Bahn (DB) ➡️ Reinforcing competition, which stimulates innovation, reduces costs, and improves the quality of rail services for end-users   The report of the German Council of Economic Experts demonstrates that the benefits of such a separation, far outweigh the transition costs. Structural separation would lead to an overall improvement, in quality, efficiency, and attractiveness of the rail sector, encouraging investments and welcoming new entrants into the market.   ALLRAIL fully supports this recommendation, which represents a significant step towards a fair and open rail market in Europe. I had the opportunity to have a conversation at the closing session of the ITF - International Transport Forum Summit with Juan Carlos Munoz, Minister of Transport and Telecommunications of Chile, Burkhard Jung, Mayor of Chile, and Lake Sagaris, Professor and Expert in inclusive mobility. Switzerland Plans to Build an Underground Logistics System in Tunnels In Switzerland, an ambitious proposal could see the construction of an expansive underground network through which self-driving pods would transport freight across the country. The new underground freight infrastructure would complement and relieve the Swiss road and rail network at critical points. Cargo Sous Terrain (CST) claims the project will reduce heavy traffic on Swiss roads by up to 40%. Because it will use only renewable energy, it will emit 80% less carbon dioxide per ton of cargo than transporting freight by road today. The providers claim to establish a complete, automated, flexible, and durable underground cargo system that allows the transport and storage of pallets and crates for packages, individual items, break bulk cargo, and bulk goods. The project is estimated to cost CHF30-35 billion ($33-39 billion) and will be raised entirely from the private sector. Swiss legislation explicitly excludes the federal government from any financial liability for the project. The Härkingen-Zurich line will be part of a proposed 500km-long network of tunnels between Geneva and St Gallen, down to 40 metres. Electrically powered self-driving pods ride at a constant 30km/hour and can transport two pallets, each ferrying goods between hubs along the network. CST wants the 70-km stretch between Härkingen and Zurich operational by 2031.
