Understanding user behavior with limited access to users can be tricky, but it's crucial for developing great products. Carol Hernández, our Head of UX, shares how we tackle this challenge at Tadaweb 👇🏼 Our strategy embraces triangulation to cross-reference data from multiple sources, enhancing the reliability and quality of our learning and their application to product decisions. We gather data from web analytics, customer success feedback, direct user interactions, and subject matter experts. By combining the qualitative and quantitative information that flows between teams and engagement metrics, we aim to grasp the full context and get the "why," "how," and "what" of user behavior. Given the nature of our business, we need to adopt a multifaceted —and often resourceful, approach to gain a thorough understanding of our users. This involves continuously developing our capacity to manage biases in interpreting observations and research output, especially since many of our insights come from indirect observation. Carol highlights three key activities that maximize the value of user-related information collection: Standardization and centralization: Use a structured method for collecting user feedback. Keep all qualitative data in one place to analyze systematically and consistently before it becomes outdated or gets lost in oblivion. Training: Develop the skills of people with customer-facing activities to ask clear, unbiased, non-leading questions and maximize the insights we can extract from live time we have with end users. For example, shifting from asking "Do you like our product?" to "Can you tell me about a time when Tadaweb was particularly useful to you?" is likely to yield more insightful and detailed responses, uncovering underlying needs and opportunities. Awareness of Bias: Acknowledge and address inherent biases in interpreting feedback. Use probing questions and cross-reference with quantitative information and other qualitative insights. This ensures a more accurate understanding of user needs and experiences. While Heuristic Reviews identify potential customer problems, they can fall short without real-world user insights. In a recent project, our UX Teams’ initial assumptions were totally overridden once we conducted our Moderated Usability Testing with the client’s target audience. This absolutely underscores why we always recommend a triangulated approach – combining qualitative and quantitative research methods. This deeper understanding of user behaviour, needs and motivations, directly impacts the likelihood of discovering the most effective solutions and the most powerful hypotheses for experimentation. Discover why user research is essential and why Heuristic Reviews on their own are just not reliable enough. In a similar way to how so-called “website tear-downs” can be problematic.
