About the authors
Erik Weihenmayer is one of the most celebrated and accomplished athletes in the world. In 2001, he became the first blind person in history to climb Mount Everest. When he stood on the top of Carstensz Pyramid in 2008, he completed his quest to climb all of the Seven Summits-the tallest peak on each of the seven continents.
In September 2014, Erik and blinded Navy veteran, Lonnie Bedwell, kayaked the entire 277-miles of the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River, considered one of the most formidable whitewater venues in the world. Erik continually seeks out new adventures, focusing his efforts on empowering people traditionally swept to the sidelines of life. He founded an organization called No Barriers, which helps people with challenges tap into the human spirit, break through barriers, and contribute to the world.
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of their Everest ascent, Erik and his team founded a new No Barriers program, No Barriers Warriors, which uses teamwork and the mountains as a transformative force to help veterans reclaim their lives after devastating injuries.
Erik is the author of the best-selling memoir, Touch the Top of the World, which was made into a feature film. For his second book, The Adversity Advantage, Erik teamed up with psychologist Dr. Paul Stoltz to show how to turn everyday struggles into everyday greatness. Erik’s newest book, No Barriers is a dive into the heart and mind at the core of the turbulent human experience. It is an exploration of the light that burns in all of us, the obstacles that threaten to extinguish that light, and the treacherous ascent towards growth and rebirth.
Erik is a graduate of Boston College, and earned a Masters in Education from Lesley University. He lives with his wife and two children in Golden, Colorado.
Dr. Paul G. Stoltz is considered the world’s leading authority on the integration and application of grit and resilience. He is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of PEAK Learning, Inc., as well as the originator of the AQ® (Adversity Quotient®) and GRIT™ theories and methods, used at Harvard Business School, MIT, and Fortune 100 companies worldwide. He resides with his extended family in the coastal mountains of San Luis Obispo, California.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2023Read this book and re-engage. Erik has taken adversity and turned it on its head and he shows you how to do the same. This is a book everyone should read, preferably at a young age, because it's inspiration will carry you through many a tough time.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2020This is a super awesome message from a guy that went through so much adversity, and yet was able to accomplish more than anyone I've ever heard about... ever. I think this is one of those books that's good to read at night before you go to sleep. Because when you wake up and face your life challenges, they will most likely look miniscule in comparison to what you just read about.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2018This was a gift for someone who has met Erik Weihenmayer. He is a truly inspiring person who was gracious and took the time to talk to her for as long as she wanted at his book signing. He even stayed after to meet his fans and she is definitely one of them. Great guy with an inspiring story.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2015Not a bad book to have if you want to read another person's perspective on adversity besides the father of adversity quotient, Dr. P. G. Stolz.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2013This is an amazing book. I was fortunate enough to meet the author, and down to eath serious hero who inspires me daily. This is worth reading for just about anyone! (Adult-Teen)

- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2007Next to the Bible, Adversity Advantage is the best personal improvement book I have ever worked through. Erik & Paul have put together an excellent way to examine where you are in life and where you want to go...and how to get there.
Higly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
There are no words to describe how amazing this book is. A mix of practical exercises with stories and inspiration. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to thrive in adversity and who wants to have a whole new perspective of life and suffering well. It’s changed a part of me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book to understand a personal perspective about overcomming disadvantage
First off - this is credited on this site to Stephen R. Covey. That annoys me intensely. It wasn't written by him. All he did was write a foreword which pales into absolute insignificance compared to what the two authors underwent which is alluded to in this book. Eric is the first person to climb Everest blind. Blind! Added to this he inspired an entire team to follow and support him through nothing more than his belief that he could do it. It was a mutual support endeavour which has and should inspire others to over come their perceived adversity. The guys were indomitable in the face of the Death Zone (anywhere 8,000 meters above sea level where the body cannot get enough oxygen to survive). I cannot conceive of crossing the road with my eyes closed let alone climbing a mountain that has claimed hundreds of lives while not being able to see my next footfall. That's what I call trusting, and most of all, inspiring trust. This is a testimony to those who, in the face of adversity, just get the hell on with it anyway. I unreservedly admire them all.
