Kind of gives a gist of where Dubai market is today - online head/eComm director / product heads/digital VP job postings for >15yrs experience candidates are advertised at AED 15K to 45K minus benefits, and still they get a 1000 applicants, while offline events/exhibitions VP's role with <15yrs experience are advertised at AED 70K+ benefits. Unfortunately GCC/MENA is AT LEAST a decade away from becoming omni-prime market like India, SEA or USA. Here- 'stepping out' and 'hanging out' and 'shopping splurge' are intertwined while in Omni-first markets - all 3 ☝ maybe mutually exclusive events. So, digital/online/omnichannel/product guys will have to face another decade of dog eats dog market, undervaluation, and limited growth to an extent that even their bathroom mirror will stop reflecting at them. But then the critical question is WHAT IF the region completely skips the omni/digital wave and adopts #AI faster than the world? Thoughts? #Habibi come to Dubai!

Who are content creators marketing to in the UAE? It should be no surprise that the UAE boasts one of the world’s highest GDP per capita rates. The UAE is home to a population comprising of over 200 nationalities, making it an ideal testing ground for brands to target diverse demographics within one market. This, paired with the unique purchasing power of a territory like the UAE, with consumers generating a strong appetite for luxury and premium goods, is the perfect storm and foundation to launch successful creator campaigns with strong ROI. Influencer sectors such as real estate, luxury fashion, beauty and wellness are highly effective at reaching an affluent audience, directly influencing high-value purchases. In terms of receptivity to creator marketing, 81% of residents have reported finding social media influencers a useful source of information on fashion and food, with 84% looking to creators for information on travel. Given such a high proportion of residents utilising social media regularly, and such high percentages of those actively using social media looking to creators for information and opinions, the UAE has a unique and motivated audience receptive to social media marketing. Interestingly, residents also widely use AD blockers when browsing on their mobiles, which limits the opportunity for other forms of more traditional digital marketing to target audiences. Given this, working with creators gives brands a solution and an excellent opportunity to still reach target audiences within the UAE (given 98% of residents are reported to use social media here). The UAE has a truly unique audience, with seemingly unlimited opportunities to work with creators as long as the territories cultural nuances are respected and taken into consideration - which is something that I’ll be diving into soon. Three things Tuesday: 1) Emaar is investing 1.5bn AED in 240 new luxury shops and restaurants in The Dubai Mall – expanding the current offering by around 20%. Do we need more shops? Yes, says Andy Love, commercial head at Knight Frank MENA – his team is struggling to satisfy demand for retail space because vacancy is ‘near zero’. Even car dealers are starting to move a street or two back off SZR into Al Quoz because of lack of showroom space. 1.5) Fun fact: Dubai retail rents were up around 11% yoy in Q1, says Taimur Khan of CBRE. 2) The Cove Rotana has been sold to a UAE investor, for an undisclosed sum. How often do hotels change hands? More than they used to, says Andy Love (again), who has sold a few himself. Before 2022, it was maybe one or two a year – now one is selling every month or two. Why? Asset owners had a few tough years before and into covid, but can now exit with higher values. 3) And UAE authorities have blocked more than a thousand websites in a crackdown on illegal streaming services – so basically your dodgy box/stick. It’s part of a global trend, says James Dunne of Hadef & Partners (below, looking lawyerly). So who gets in trouble? At the moment, the dodgy service provider, says James – if they can be tracked down, some are global – but end users should be wary about using hacked devices/software on a laptop full of personal data and passwords, if not about penalties.

We are first hand experiencing the growth of Quick Commerce, E-commerce and retail media in UAE. The country’s demographics skew toward younger, affluent, and digitally savvy consumers. This creates a unique opportunity for brands to leverage retail media and social commerce as two of their key strategies in the region. According to Statista, digital ad spending in the UAE reached approximately $1.2 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow at an annual rate of 7.02% (CAGR 2023-2027), reaching $1.57 billion by 2027. A significant portion of this spend is shifting towards retail media due to its effectiveness in targeting consumers. The introduction of #amazondsp has been one of the main contributing factors to the growth in retail media spending in the region.
