Tahya Misr Terminal Positions Alexandria as Premier Middle Eastern Transit Hub Shipping Arabia, July 03, 2024 — The Tahya Misr Multipurpose Terminal is transforming Alexandria Port into a leading transit trade hub in the Middle East. Enhanced to accommodate giant vessels, the terminal has partnered with six global shipping lines, and a new container rail freight terminal is scheduled to open by year-end. The terminal's capabilities to handle fourth-generation vessels are central to Egypt’s aim to become a regional nexus for transportation and logistics. Since its launch, Tahya Misr Terminal has received over 330 ships and handled around 410,000 TEUs, adhering to stringent safety and professional standards. A significant milestone was reached on May 30, 2024, when the terminal welcomed the APOLLON from the CMA CGM line, the largest container ship to enter the port, measuring 366 meters in length and 51 meters in width, with a capacity of over 15,000 TEUs. This event showcased the terminal's readiness to handle substantial maritime traffic. It also began receiving multiple general cargo ships at its southern dock. Alexandria Port's transit rate has hit 39% of total handling, with the Tahya Misr Terminal recognized for its productivity and safety standards among CMA CGM's managed terminals globally. In partnership with the Egyptian Customs Authority, the terminal has enhanced its logistical operations by implementing a sophisticated customs system, aiding global distributors and introducing new cargo types to the market. The terminal incorporates advanced smart technology, such as an OCR system, which records all truck and cargo movements, reducing truck turnaround times to under 20 minutes and significantly improving operational efficiency. Development efforts also include constructing the Railway Container Station (RCS) on a 20,000-square-meter area with four railway lines. This facility will link the terminal to Egypt's national railways, promoting efficient cargo transport to major dry ports. Covering 570,000 square meters with depths up to 17.5 meters, the terminal can handle multiple vessel types simultaneously and has a significant annual capacity across containers, general goods, and vehicles. Currently equipped with four giant quay cranes and planning an expansion to ten cranes by 2026, Tahya Misr is set to enhance its service capacity further. In collaboration with CMA CGM, the terminal employs 99% Egyptian staff, generating 1,000 direct and over 5,000 indirect job opportunities, contributing robustly to Egypt's economic development. The discussions focused on enhancing collaboration in industry, transport, and logistics. During the meeting, El-Wazir underscored the strong historical relations between Egypt and Kuwait, highlighting their readiness to expand cooperation which promises fruitful economic outcomes. Both nations expressed a commitment to leveraging their strong ties to advance mutual interests in transport and industry sectors. The meeting also revisited the terms of a previous Memorandum of Understanding concerning the Berenice Maritime Port, emphasizing the project's role in Egypt's comprehensive plan to elevate its ports. This initiative forms part of Egypt’s broader strategy to transform into a regional hub for transport, logistics, and transit trade, aligning with directives from President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. This ambitious plan integrates tourism, industry, and agriculture with a robust transport network comprising highways, railroads, and maritime routes, linking strategically to airports and seaports along the Red and Mediterranean Seas. The discussions extended to logistical enhancements, particularly the development of 31 dry ports and logistics zones across Egypt aimed at reducing congestion and facilitating smoother trade flows. This network will connect key production zones with major maritime points, streamlining the movement of goods and bolstering the efficiency of trade corridors such as the Sokhna–Alexandria and Cairo–Alexandria routes. Further, the talks highlighted potential cooperation in industrial development, reflecting Egypt’s urgent seven-pillar plan to revitalize its industrial sector within the national industrial strategy framework. This dialogue reaffirms both countries' commitment to a collaborative framework that strengthens their positions as pivotal trade and logistics leaders in the region, driving forward economic and industrial advancement. Oman Ports Conference Highlights Logistic Connectivity Amidst 2040 Vision Goals Shipping Arabia, May 2, 2024 — The second edition of the Oman Ports Conference, organized by Al-Ru'ya newspaper in partnership with the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, was held this week in Muscat. The conference coincided with the inaugural celebration of Logistics Day, under the patronage of His Highness Sayyid Harib bin Thuwaini Al Said, Assistant Secretary-General of the Council of Ministers for Conferences. Engineer Khamis bin Mohammed Al Shammakhi, Undersecretary for Transportation at the Ministry, highlighted the conference's alignment with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040. He emphasized the development of Oman's logistic sector as a primary driver of economic growth, noting the sector's increasing contribution to the GDP—from 5 percent in 2022 to 5.7 percent in 2023—and its role in improving Oman's global logistic and industrial rankings. The conference introduced the Executive Program for Oman Logistics Center 2023-2025 and discussed the phases of investment attraction seminars aimed at diversifying Oman’s economic portfolio in transportation and logistics. These initiatives are designed to enhance the integration and competitiveness of Oman's logistics on a global scale. Hatem bin Hamad Al Taie, Secretary-General of the conference and Editor-in-Chief of "Al-Ru'ya," spoke on the theme "Oman on the Logistics Performance Index." He outlined how the conference supports the national plans for economic diversification and the development of non-oil sectors, which are crucial to Oman’s economic development and provide substantial investment and employment opportunities. Mohammed Alhassan and Pankaj Gupta, co-Founders and co-CEOs of Gulf Islamic Investments (GII), signed an agreement with LogiPoint Executive Chairman, Mr. Aamer Alireza in Jeddah on 27th May to create a joint #logistics platform to provide Grade A warehousing solutions across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. LogiPoint, a subsidiary of SISCO, is a leading industrial and logistics real estate developer of Saudi Arabia, which invests, manages and operates bonded and non-bonded logistics parks and zones. The GII-Logipoint joint venture will create new logistic infrastructure in key #Saudi cities, starting in Riyadh and Jeddah, providing #warehousing and handling facilities as the backbone of a multi-asset logistical network serving companies across The Kingdom. This #partnership, worth over SAR 1 billion (approx. $300 million), is the second logistics deal in quick succession for GII, a leading Shari’ah-compliant global alternative #investment company with over US$4.5 billion of assets under management (AUM).
