Minister Al Kaabi calls for bolstering global position of Arab iron and steel industry Doha: The 17th Arab Steel Summit and International Iron and Steel Exhibition was inaugurated by Minister of State for Energy Affairs H E Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, yesterday. Delivering the keynote speech, Minister Al Kaabi called for positioning the Arab iron and steel industry firmly on the global map and creating the appropriate regulatory and investment conditions to stimulate its growth and enhance its competitiveness. Minister Al Kaabi pointed to various challenges facing the steel industry in the Arab world, including geopolitical crises that impact global economies and consequently the growth and development of the steel industry.  “This year witnessed a strong demand for steel across the region, driven by big infrastructure projects and a robust real estate market. However, Arab countries produce around 40 million tons of iron and steel annually out of a global production of around two billion tons. This highlights the challenge to enhance our position on the global map and to stimulate the growth of our industry and enhance its competitiveness on all levels,” he said. Furthermore, Minister Al Kaabi called for aligning solutions with a balance between economic, social, and environmental goals, especially with regard to reducing the carbon footprint, which is the cornerstone of all sustainability strategies. He also referred to the efforts of Qatar Steel, which since 1978, has maintained a low carbon footprint thanks to its use of MIDREX technology and production through electric arc furnaces, reducing carbon dioxide emissions to less than half the global average. “The Arab steel industry must pay special attention to investing in advanced technologies and fostering a culture of innovation, because the future belongs to those who invest in research and development, and artificial intelligence,” he added. The event was organised by the Arab Iron and Steel Union (AISU) under the theme, ‘The Future of the Iron and Steel Industry in the Arab World’, brought together over 500 participants and 40 exhibitors from leading players and experts in the industry. Also, addressing the summit, Chairman of the Arab Iron and Steel Union, Awwad Al Khaldi, expressed his hopes that the conference would serve as a valuable opportunity for collaboration and knowledge-sharing among participants, while also looking forward to a bright future for both the Arab and global steel industries. Merger Update: Alba and Ma'aden Extend Deadline The potential merger between Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) and subsidiaries of Saudi Arabia's Ma'aden has taken a new turn. The deadline for the deal has been extended to April 30, 2025, providing both companies with additional time for due diligence and evaluation. This strategic move could create the seventh largest aluminium manufacturer globally, combining the strengths of both companies. Alba's CEO, Ali Al Baqali, highlighted the potential benefits, stating that the merger would make them the largest smelter in the region. Alba is Bahrain’s largest listed company, with a market valuation of close to BHD2 billion ($5.3 billion). EDF Group, J-POWER, and Yamna Consortium Awarded Land Block for Green Ammonia Project in Oman In a significant development for Oman’s green energy ambitions, a consortium comprising EDF Group, J-POWER, and Yamna has been granted a land block by Hydrogen Oman SPC (Hydrom) to develop a large-scale green ammonia project. Covering an area of 341km2 in the Governorate of Dhofar, the project aims to have a capacity of producing 1 million tonnes of green ammonia per year. Leveraging Oman’s abundant renewable energy resources, the consortium plans to install approximately 4.5 GW of wind and solar capacity, along with battery storage and a state-of-the-art 2.5 GW electrolyser. This project, with a 3,000-ton daily production capacity, will create around 1,200 direct jobs and additional roles in logistics, maintenance, and material supply, fostering economic stability in the region. Egypt and Qatar to build $100 million iron and steel plant An Egyptian-Qatari partnership is planning to build a $100 million iron and steel plant in Qena in southern Egypt. The factory, which aims to apply for a licence in the first half of 2025, will start production in 2026. Most of the production will be exported to regional and international markets. An investment partnership consisting of Egypt and Qatar has accelerated its efforts to build an iron and steel plant worth a total of $100 million in Egypt's Qena District. The factory, which is currently under construction, is expected to apply to the Ministry of Industry and Technology (Ministry of Industry and Trade) for a licence to produce rebar and operate in the iron and steel sector in the first half of 2025.
