This latest upsize to QDCI in my view reflects our performance across all four factors above and the deployment pipeline and market opportunity we have so carefully navigated. Lawrence E. Golub, CEO of Golub Capital, is seeing increasing opportunities for private credit in the Gulf, powered by the rise of mid-sized businesses in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. While initial lending prospects are estimated in the “hundreds of millions,” these businesses represent a growing demand for direct lending. Golub Capital, which recently opened an office in Abu Dhabi and hired Naser Almutairi as Managing Director for the region, is among several firms expanding to tap into this emerging market. The Gulf’s financial ecosystem is attracting some major private credit players like Pemberton Asset Management, Monroe Capital LLC, and Blue Owl Capital. Despite limited local deal flow, firms like BlackRock and Blackstone have leveraged the region for fundraising from state-backed investors and family offices. Golub Capital, managing $70 billion in loans, aims to deepen its presence as the Gulf’s mid-sized business sector evolves.

Access to capital may have been the original attraction of the Middle East for hedge funds but it is no longer the only attraction. Top hedge funds have to compete for top international talent, more and more that top talent wants to be based here in the UAE. A fund able to offer a desk here has an advantage over others who can't offer this when it comes to attracting and retaining top talent.

thanks to Citywire and Gavin Lumsden for highlighting the ongoing sales of UK Equities at rock bottom valuations by asset allocators. In the half year report for Schroder Income Growth Fund PLC to end February 2024 which was published recently, I commented on the noticeable disconnect between company fundamentals and valuations. This disconnect has been recognised by overseas corporates, private equity buyers, as well as companies themselves, all of whom have begun to take advantage of the situation through bids and share buy backs. This trend will no doubt continue as long as valuations remain compelling. Such low valuations present attractive opportunities for forward returns for investors, large and small, institutional and retail, and should not be reserved solely for corporate and private equity buyers

Dubai/Abu Dhabi is growing as a global financial hub. Despite being significantly smaller than New York, London, Hong Kong and Singapore, it is likely the most promising in terms of growth in coming years. Though local public markets in my view are still in early stage of development (though have high potential as well) in terms of liquidity and exposure to international investors, infrastructure for investing from UAE globally is available here and now, including legislation/regulatory environment, low taxes, high pools of capital, time zoning and quality of living.

A quick read on our initial thoughts on the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

If UK based investing institutions remain cautious about investing in UK equities the 'market' will find a solution. As I mentioned in my last post the UK equity market is currently in run-off due to the consistent selling of UK shares by UK based investors. We are all pleading for policy makers to provide catalysts for capital to return to the UK public equity market. This they are starting to do, but it will take time to make a difference and meanwhile the 'Trump trade' is encouraging even more money into US dollar assets. So, we need more self help. We need to innovate, to find ways to create demand for UK Equities and improved price discovery. One possible way is replicating private equity in the public arena, with a good old fashioned buy and build acquisition vehicle (aka Lord Hanson, and the old Melrose team). There are lots of potential 'targets', lots of potential strategic investors, lots of existing investors who would like to keep skin in the game rather than sell out, enough reasonably priced credit, and a more accommodating set of listing and governance rules. Call this the free market equivalent of the Government's industrial strategy, with a single focus = creating wealth, by helping make UK Equities Great Again.

Abu Dhabi's ADGM continues to attract global firms as assets under management grow 215%.
