On 9th Dec, I attended an event organised by Travelport The theme of the event was Modernisation of Travel Agencies with Automation & NDC (New Distribution Capability) What is NDC ? NDC is a new system that lets airlines sell tickets and services directly with more personalized options and real-time updates. Later, Industry leaders like John C. Elieson , Alexis Guest, Damian Hickey, and Anil Prashar shared insights on the future of travel tech and NDC advancements. How have we used it ? 1. Nixtour India Private Limited has integrated NDC for over 15 airlines, with several more in progress. It’s a new and modern tool to enhance experience. 2. A few challenges: NDC faces higher financial costs and technological complexities compared to traditional EDIFACT via GDS. 3. While outdated, EDIFACT remains more stable and widely used, making NDC adoption challenging. In the coming years, these issues will be resolved hopefully. This year, the Middle East’s tourism sector is seeing significant growth, with countries like the UAE and Oman driving transformation, according to UN Tourism and IATA reports. The region is spearheading global tourism recovery in 2024, seeing a 29% rise in international arrivals — the highest growth worldwide. As a DMC operating in both Oman and UAE, we are proud to see that both destinations, along with Bahrain, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, are playing key roles in this growth. The UAE continues to shine as a global tourism and transit hub. Dubai International Airport is on track to handle 91 million passengers by the end of 2024, driven by UAE’s luxury experiences and state-of-the-art infrastructure. Meanwhile, Oman’s tourism is thriving, with expectations of 5.3 million visitors in 2024, marking a 24.7% increase. #GCC Update: Qatar Airways has been named the ‘Airline of the Year’ for 2024 by the industry organization, Airline Ratings. In addition to the ‘Airline of the Year’ accolade, Qatar Airways has also won ‘Best Business Class’ for the fifth consecutive year, as well as ‘Best Catering’. The yearly Airline Ratings awards include several key categories: ‘Best In-flight Entertainment’ and ‘Best Catering’, ‘Best Cabin Crew’, ‘Best Environmental Airline’, and ‘Regional Airline of the Year’. Airlines are assessed based on various criteria including fleet age, passenger reviews, profitability, safety rating, product rating, innovation, and forward fleet orders. Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, said: “We, at Qatar Airways, stand for delivering exceptional customer experiences, and it is always reaffirming to be recognized for our relentless pursuit of service excellence. Receiving the ‘Airline of the Year’ accolade by Airline Ratings has reinforced our commitment to innovation and customer care that defines our brand.” Airline Ratings Editor-in-Chief, Geoffrey Thomas, said: “In our objective analysis, Qatar Airways came out number one in many key areas although it was a very close scoring for the top five. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is on the cusp of implementing a unified visa system - a bold initiative reminiscent of Europe’s Schengen Zone. This policy could redefine regional tourism, elevate the Gulf’s competitiveness, and drive sustained economic growth. In 2024, the GCC attracted over 64 million international tourists, contributing approximately $105 billion in revenue. Fragmented visa processes often deter multi-country exploration within the region. A single visa for all GCC countries addresses this pain point, enabling seamless travel and maximising the region’s appeal to a global audience. The potential economic impact is substantial. The GCC, analysts estimate incremental revenues of up to $30 billion annually by 2030, alongside significant job creation across tourism, hospitality, and aviation sectors. Challenges remain, notably around aligning security protocols, streamlining immigration systems, and integrating digital infrastructure.
