talabat’s IPO: A tale of strong demand but challenging start Talabat, the leading food delivery platform in the Middle East and North Africa, marked a significant milestone with its $2 billion IPO on the Dubai Financial Market (DFM). Despite opening strongly at Dhs1.70, above its IPO price of Dhs1.60, the stock closed its debut day 4.4% lower at Dhs1.53—an overall drop of 7.5% from its peak. Owned by Germany’s Delivery Hero, Talabat’s IPO was the largest tech sector listing in the GCC region this year, valuing the company at approximately Dhs37 billion. The IPO also attracted cornerstone investors, including the UAE Strategic Investment Fund and the Abu Dhabi Pension Fund, demonstrating strong regional interest. Founded in 2004 in Kuwait, Talabat now operates across eight markets with over 65,000 active partners, reporting impressive growth figures: $6 billion in gross merchandise volume in 2023, up from $4 billion in 2021. talabat the leading on-demand delivery platform in the Middle East and North Africa, has priced its initial public offering (IPO) at the top of its price range, raising $2.04 billion. The company increased its offering size from 15% to 20% of its total share capital to accommodate substantial investor demand, it announced last week. This marks the largest global technology IPO in 2024 and the largest IPO in the Middle East & North Africa this year. It is also among the top ten global IPOs this year. 📊 A month of revitalization in MENA MENA startups raised $282M across 63 deals in September — 234% increase from August and a 607% surge compared to September 2023. Venture capitalists continue to favor early-stage investments, with Seed-stage startups securing $102M across 32 deals. Debt financing accounted for only 12% of the total volume. The largest deal was closed by Saudi Arabian startup SHIFT, raising $82.8M to expand its car-sharing platform. In second place was Syarah, an online marketplace for buying and selling cars, which raised $60M in a Series C round (including $20M in debt financing). The top three countries remained unchanged: 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia: 23 startups raised $170.8M.  🇦🇪 UAE: 12 startups raised $73.8M.  🇪🇬 Egypt: 13 startups raised $25M. Despite geopolitical challenges, the MENA ecosystem continues to grow. In Q3 2024, startups raised $727M, a 192% increase year-over-year. The outlook for Q4 remains positive.

June review: the MENA startup ecosystem attracts capital, with Q2 funding growing 5% to $453 million compared to Q1 2024. ▪️ MENA startups raised $116 million across 38 tech startup deals in June 2024, bringing the total for the first half of 2024 to $882 million. ▪️ Funding activity rose 182% compared to the same period in 2023. ▪️ UAE-based startups led the region in June with $82.5 million raised, followed by Egypt with $15 million and Saudi Arabia with $13.5 million. ▪️ B2B startups dominated June funding, raising $66.4 million across 18 deals (74% of the total investment). ▪️ The majority of June’s investment went to the pre-Series A stage ($45 million) and Seed stage ($27.3 million). ▪️ Fintech reclaimed its position as the most funded sector in June with $38 million across 10 deals. The Central Bank of the UAE’s Quarterly Economic Review—Q1 2024, released recently, is an exciting read that underscores Abu Dhabi's pivotal role in driving the UAE's economic success. In 2023, the UAE's non-oil foreign trade hit a record AED 2.4 trillion, propelled by strategic economic partnerships and a significant rise in exports and re-exports. Moreover, Key trading partners such as Türkiye, India, and Saudi Arabia have boosted non-oil exports, with gold, petroleum oils, and aluminium leading the charge. A strong import sector further supports this robust trade growth, with China, India, and the US as top partners. Abu Dhabi’s dynamic non-hydrocarbon sector has been a cornerstone of this growth, with notable performance in tourism, transportation, financial services, construction, and real estate. The non-hydrocarbon GDP saw a 6.7 per cent increase in Q4 2023 and is expected to maintain strong growth at 5.4 per cent in 2024 and 5.3 per cent in 2025. I am so pleased to note that government and private sector investments have fostered a conducive environment for industrial growth, reflected in positive business sentiment and robust demand, as indicated by the UAE's Purchasing Managers' Index. Looking ahead, Abu Dhabi's economic outlook remains exceptionally positive. The emirate’s strategic initiatives and investments in key sectors, coupled with a stable macroeconomic environment, position it as a critical driver of the UAE’s future prosperity. Singapore-based venture capital (VC) firm Golden Gate Ventures landed its first $100 million MENA fund Wednesday, with $20 million in commitments from Qatari investors, as the firm plans to break into the MENA region. First funding Anchor investors of the fund include Al Khor Holding W.L.L, Al @Attiya Group and Sheikh Jassim Bin Jabor Al Thani, a statement from Golden Gate Ventures showed. This is the first international VC fund to be established and managed within Qatar. It will focus on powering startups in sectors such as alternative energy, green technology, business-to-business (B2B) artificial intelligence (AI), and energy-related deep tech. Other sectors that the fund will cover include fintech, health tech, and edtech. Being asked for the smart rental index by two major dailies on the same day. Thank you Khaleej Times Dubai Land Department Waheed Abbas Rohit Bachani, co-founder, Merlin Real Estate, said tenants have struggled with the rent inconsistencies as landlords adjusted pricing based on the development of newer, more modern buildings. “This has often led to situations where tenants in older properties were charged similar rents to those in newly developed buildings with better amenities. The introduction of Dubai's smart rental index marks a significant step forward in addressing these issues, as it ensures rents are more reflective of the specific property rather than the broader area,” he said. Bachani added that initiatives like the Makani and Ejari system enable the index to incorporate metadata, offering unit and building-level comparisons. "This is a crucial advancement for tenants, as it prevents arbitrary pricing in areas with a mix of both new and older buildings. For instance, in areas like Downtown and Business Bay, where the range of building quality is wide, the new index will shift from an average area price to a more precise and fair pricing model based on the specific building and unit," said Bachani.
