Qatar’s Inaugural ESG bond headlines busy day for EM sovereigns Qatar returned to the primary international bond markets this week (Tuesday 21st May) with an inaugural Green deal in what was the MENA's largest ever ESG trade and the joint largest ever CEEMEA Green bond alongside a USD2.5bn long- 7-year issue from Türkiye in 2023. The Gulf State was joined on Tuesday by Uzbekistan and Romania, with three sovereigns taking the plunge in the primary debt markets the day after a European holiday. An interesting discussion yesterday with Hussein Sayed, CFA, CMT and Randa KHECHA on CNBC Arabia on the change in settlement structure in US equities from T+2 to T+1. In our opinion, and with evidence from the change in India last year, this should have a positive impact on trading volumes in the market beyond the near term. In the next few days, as market participants get used to the change, liquidity may be impacted as more cash is arranged for until everyone 'settles' into the new rhythm. We are already seeing this play out in some strange moves in markets this week. While there will be impact on foreign investors as they have to plan better for their Fx transactions that go along with their US equity trades and back office teams needing to work longer hours, a more important impact will be on stock borrowing and lending transactions as the window to recall stock borrow narrows. Beyond this week, this change will hopefully only be looked at as a positive development and an improvement in market infrastructure as the world moves towards a T+0 settlement environment. https://lnkd.in/dWZaMAHg

Opacity is the common characteristic of most Arabian Gulf sovereign wealth funds, but ADQ’s disclosure this week with a prospectus for a bond issue shines a light on the Abu Dhabi fund’s evolution. ADQ disclosed that it was given US$78 billion of assets, including US$31 billion contributed by Etihad, as well as US$36 billion in cash. It has swelled from US$146 billion in 2021 to US$166 billion in 2022 and US$196 billion in 2023 – very close to estimates made by Global SWF, the only research platform to put a value on ADQ.
