Cannes we keep it real? Over the past week, I’ve seen countless creative freelancers and contractors sharing their struggles, citing this year as one of the toughest in their careers. Projects are disappearing, people are being made redundant left and right, and many are considering leaving the industry altogether. This trend isn’t confined to the creative industry; I’ve been chatting with clients in multiple sectors who are all laying people off and reviewing budgets. Amidst these challenges, it's hard to ignore the excesses of the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity …. Cannes it be any more over the top? The scale and extravagance of the festival are staggering, with lavish parties, expensive accommodations, and a focus on luxury that feels out of touch with the broader industry's current struggles. Cannes is an advertising circle jerk. The festival often feels like an echo chamber where the same industry voices congratulate each other year after year, rather than fostering genuine innovation or addressing real-world issues. Cannes is not solving real issues. Despite the grand speeches and lofty rhetoric, the festival often fails to tackle the pressing issues facing the creative industry today, such as job insecurity, diversity, and sustainable practices. Cannes is full of agency leaders trying way too hard to look cool. The spectacle of agency leaders striving to appear cutting-edge can feel forced and disingenuous, detracting from the event's potential to foster genuine creativity and innovation. Cannes is account directors flying in by helicopter for a ted talk on ai and creativity. The image of executives arriving in helicopters for brief appearances at panels on ai and creativity highlights the disconnect between the festival's opulence and the day-to-day realities of most industry professionals. Cannes has a huge environmental impact. The environmental footprint of the festival is significant, from international travel to the waste generated by events, posing a stark contrast to the industry's alleged commitment to sustainability. Cannes hot topic this year will be ai and creativity (spoiler). Predictably, ai and creativity will dominate discussions this year. While important, this focus often feels repetitive and lacks fresh, actionable insights. Cannes is where the idea borrowers are celebrated The festival frequently overlooks the contributions of the individuals who do the actual creative work, instead highlighting agency leaders and executives. Have I missed anything out? Given the current state of the industry, is it time for a rethink? Should we continue to pour resources into an event that seems increasingly out of step with the real challenges and needs of the creative community? Should we focus out how we can make the industry more inclusive, sustainable, and genuinely innovative? Cannes we do something different? Redesign. Rebrand. The marmite of e-comm decisions. Its seen as either a vanity project or a must deliver opportunity. If you are in the former camp then I wager you are not looking at your opportunities with optimisation in mind. We are in the peak of 2025 predictions & suggestions.. some good, others not so good, but one thing is for sure.. CHANGE. Businesses that I see prospering are those that have embraced change to meet the demand of the consumer. If it was not part of your plans last year, it should be this year. Every now and then, I ask fellow creatives a tough question— What do you do when a project is all set to take off, and then… nothing? Radio silence from the client. We’ve all been there: idle clients, unfinished contracts, and payments that seem like they’re lost in space. It’s uncomfortable to talk about, but in the creative industry, it happens more often than we’d like to admit. Late payments. No payments. And then that awkward follow-up dance begins. To keep things smooth, we put a policy in place. Simple but effective: 50% upfront. This way, we both have skin in the game. But here’s the truth—it’s still a balancing act. When payments are delayed, we’re left sending those “gentle reminder” emails, hoping it won’t hurt the relationship.  And while we try to manage it all with grace, it can lead to some serious cash flow problems. So here’s the question I’ve been reflecting on: How do you handle situations like these? What strategies have you found that protect your business, while keeping the creative energy alive? When we got together to discuss the early stages of our next Crowsnest report – our bird’s eye view of the trends impacting powerful sectors – we realised that our approach did not reflect our creative process in the work we undertake for our clients. Thank you Cannes! Well more importantly THANK YOU to ALL of you who came to my talk and wanted to Get Sh*t Done 💪. As promised here is the picture of us all, hopefully I managed to capture everyone! Now for the important bit – if you were there, I want you to drop a comment and connect with another so you can start to Get Sh*t Done. 🙌   If you weren’t in Cannes, this post won’t make a lot of sense so let me get you up to speed. I was asked to talk on the Future Gazer series at Cannes about a subject that I am very passionate about ‘F*cking Diversity’. Why the swearing? Well, because I’m frustrated that we are still needing to have these discussions in 2024 but here we are. I was asked to talk about the 3 key trends I could see in this area over the next 18 months and this is what I talked about:   1. We need to talk about AI

AI has a diversity issue. And if we don’t recognise and address this, the more AI becomes part of our everyday working lives over the next 18 months, the more we run the risk of perpetuating these biases. What do I mean? AI is as biased as it’s source material, for example if you type show me a CEO into Chat GPT you get a picture of…. a white male. So, what can we do about it? It is important that we scrutinise the output of AI as much as if it was human made and not fall into the temptation to assume it is correct just because AI created it. 
 2. Diverse campaigns are going to get better but…

Brands will either do this the easy way or the hard way. What is the hard way? Putting out badly thought-out campaigns that receive a massive backlash. This backlash is damaging to brands but it will also ensure that the next time they do a campaign, they will make sure they get it right. So what is the easy way? Be diverse and the campaigns will take care of themselves. I guarantee if you have more diverse teams from bottom to top, not only will you have the safeguards to stop bad campaigns going out the door, you will be able to create much more genuine and authentic campaigns that avoid the dreaded backlash and hit the spot first time.
 3. The future of diversity is micro-actions

When we think about such a big issue as diversity, we often automatically think about big actions that solve the problem in one go. Actually, small actions that are easy to do and replicate en masse can have a far bigger impact. These could be liking a diversity related post, amplifying a marginalised voice, giving more visibility to their work or calling out something that doesn’t feel right. This is where the selfie comes in – I wanted an easy way for everyone at the event to connect and start building a power network of micro-actioners.   Now you know the context, you can still get involved. BIGGEST lesson: don’t rely on just one sector, one market, or one country ❌ Political turmoil. Big brands freeze advertising. Chaos. Countless agencies SUFFER from relying solely on local brands, leaving them with unpaid salaries and bounced cheques. It sucks. Everyone told me to “specialise” - but I chose to “diversify”. Having clients across Australia & Bangladesh has meant financial stability. I sleep better at night, and fall in love what we do knowing we work with all kinds of beautiful people - MNCs, business conglomerates, DJs, pharmacies, universities, content creators, cafes & even your favourite aunties 🤪 When in doubt, always follow your gut ✅ Progress Journal | 3.0

Finishing off a whirlwind week. This week we’ve, completed a proposal for Air Arabia, worked on a bunch of KIA documents, worked a couple of Williams docs and been updating the CIDA website for an amazing client. And now to finish it off we will be sending across our latest development of an aparthotel brand. It’s also the big man, main chief, big daaawwwgs birthday today. Yes you’re right, my birthday. (If you work for yourself you’ll understand how important it is to big up thy self, even though it’s cringe) There’s a few things I learned this year and I’ll share them with you. 1 - If you really want to make money, invest in a Range Rover repair company. 2 - don’t tell anyone what you’re doing until you’ve done it, this will avoid egg on your face when things do go wrong. 3 - trust the process, life is a wave 🌊 4 - gut instinct is invaluable. 5 - being a nice person pays off. 7 - don’t get carried away on LinkedIn posts, it’s not a manifesto you jack ass. 6 - learn to deal with your dyslexia. One of the key elements of design, is balance. Creating harmony between different visual elements - media, colour, texture, light, text - so if they were to be placed on the hands of a scale, they'd be of equal weight.⠀ ⠀ If the balance isn't quite right, the design will feel out of kilter. One of the simplest ways to achieve balance is by using symmetry.⠀ ⠀ When you next peek at your website, think about the use of symmetry. This year has seen some soul searching here at Halo . After 20 years of continuous improvement, we are always looking for ways to grow. So we have been asking ourselves some very big questions – like why do clients come to Halo? What they are seeking from us? What do we really offer? Next year is going to see some changes, specifically in how we define and articulate the real value that we bring to the table. It is going to see changes in how we work and how we achieve the outcomes that we’re always aiming for clients, and that define our success. But we also know this is larger than Halo. This is an industry shift. This is a refocusing of what you’re actually buying from a brand agency. Which is why it is so good for me to read this article by our close neighbours Taxi Studio and Spencer Buck in Design Week . As brand agencies, we need to be thinking about how we talk about and deliver our work. And there is so much sense spoken in this article. So, I’d like to wish Taxi all the best in their new home (although it does mean you’ll be a little further away from us now). And I would like to encourage other leading brand agencies to really make the time to think about what the future of our industry might look like.
