𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐔𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐍𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐝! During our onboarding session with Cohort 8 of the Business School of Counselling, we discussed a vital topic 𝐑𝐨𝐥𝐞 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐬. A role model is someone doing what you aspire to do, someone you observe and learn from. But here’s the concern: many young counsellors say they don’t see role models in the counselling profession outside the walls of universities. One student shared how difficult it is to find Nigerian counsellors online or on social media and thanked me for making myself available online to guide and mentor them. Every profession has its forerunners. John the Baptist was the forerunner of Jesus, he cleared the path to make Jesus’ ministry easier. In the same way, forerunners in the counselling profession must pave the way for young and aspiring counsellors. Sadly, despite the rise of social media, many senior counsellors shy away from it. The Bible asks, “How will the people hear without a preacher?” Similarly, how will young counsellors learn and grow if they can’t find you in their space? It’s not enough to be known in your university or professional body. Are you preparing others to take the baton? Are you ensuring the continuity of this noble profession? Social media is where young people are and that includes young counsellors, student counsellors and aspiring counsellors. As forerunners, it is pertinent that you make yourselves visible online. Use your platforms to show the importance of counselling. Let them see that this is a profession worth pursuing. Be the guide they need. They won’t know unless they are taught. And they won’t believe unless they see someone showing them the way. To all our experienced counsellors, I appeal to you embrace social media as a tool for mentorship. We should not fret for what is past, nor should we be anxious about the future; men of discernment deal only with the present moment.- Chanakya #Discernment is critical leadership power for upgrading decision-making. Like parenting, leaders face complex, challenging, and tough decisions daily while attempting to balance risk, create optimal impact, and work hard to get it “right.” Have you ever thought about how many of your decisions are made in the realm of the “messy” stuff (disagreement, misalignment, conflict, time constraints or other dilemmas) where the stakes are high, the emotions are strong and there is no specific right or wrong way to approach it? #Leaders assume the need to be decisive and know all the answers and sometimes #fail due to -Strong convictions that lead to black-and-white thinking -Lack of desire or ability to shift into learning -Lack of discovery mode and situational intelligence, Unlike parenting, the approach to complex business situations where discernment lives does exist! It is #accessible as -How-to thinking structure that encompasses sense-making, -Leveraging intuition, while applying analytical techniques, -Being curious to gather situational understanding, -Having a devil’s advocate to challenge your assumptions, and -Practising emotional intelligence. All these practices make up a #holistic #approach for your thinking structure as a strategy when faced with discerning difficult decisions. #Discernment as a cognitive structure is underutilized but well-researched in pointing to the essential need for evaluating and differentiating information to make informed decisions. Kent D. As 2024 ended and 2025 began, I prioritised silence. Found out exactly how hard it is to find moments and days filled with silence and inner presence. It wasn't planned. December was filled with work, especially for my Worthy by Design program first batch - it involved discovery calls, designing each session, continuous feedback seeking from the participants, staying focused on creating the content for each session (which I almost always did on the Fridays 👀), and continuous learning from self reflection based on what I was hearing from the participants. The second batch will be announced soon with some design changes based on the feedback I've received from participants. There was also planning for a new multi-state study that I'm a part of as a researcher, and brainstorming for new programs for 2025. Towards the end of the 3rd week of December, I felt I didn't have enough time for rest, and yet, everything I was doing brought me new energy! By the middle of the last week of December, I could feel the need for inner silence growing within me. On 31st December, 8 pm, I put my phone on silent mode, and it stayed that way till 3rd January. Throughout the first two weeks of January, I made it a practice to get in touch with my inner silence, irrespective of the external pulls to my attention. I prioritised sleeping - there were days when I was up for barely 5 hours. I realised my nervous system was craving the rest. It felt good to be able to provide my body and mind what they needed. I prioritised movement - there were days that I worked out, and on the days I didn't work out, I breathed and moved with the breathing. This is something new I'm learning to do from my Kallaripayattu teacher. The release I could feel in my body from just breathing in and out, and allowing my body, my arms, my legs to simply move without an agenda.... Oh, how I was craving for it! I read 2.5 books in the first three days of the year! This is after years of not being able to finish reading a book! I surprised myself with this one! I was silent across most social media platforms - the more I travelled within my inner silence, the less I wanted to express outwards. In that inner silence, an intense inner conversation started sometimes, only to trail off into deeper silence. Apparently, there are layers and intensities of Inner Silence! I did work - there were the occasional calls, meetings, sessions. I experimented with being in touch with my inner silence even during those external conversations.
