With my previous experience of working as a QA, I have observed that most of the projects and/or products experience more loses due to defects, inefficiencies, and waste which is referred as The Cost of Poor Quality (COPQ). COPQ is a kind of a metric that measures the financial losses incurred due to poor quality products or services. It quantifies these hidden costs that can significantly impact your cost of the project/product. It helps identify areas for improvement and prioritize quality initiatives. The Three Pillars of COPQ Quality expert Joseph Juran categorized COPQ into three primary costs: 1. Prevention Costs: These are the costs incurred to prevent defects and errors from happening in the first place. eg. investing in Quality planning, training etc. 2. Appraisal Costs: These are the costs associated with identifying and detecting defects such as: * Testing * Inspection * Audits * Reviews * Surveys 3. Failure Costs: These are the costs incurred when defects are not detected or corrected in time typically production defects. The cost of fixing these is huge as compared to previous ones. The ultimate goal of any team or project should be to reduce COPQ to zero. SOLID Principles for Testers: The Open-Closed We’ll use a Login class again, because software testers encounter login pages so frequently. Imagine that there’s a company with a number of different teams that all need to write UI test automation for their features. One of their test engineers, Joe, creates a Login class that anyone can use. Most teams utilizing cucumber in their automation are wasting their time. Why?  Because they are missing the point of BDD.  Most places I have seen it implemented it is without the key aspect of BDD which is the conversation around acceptance criteria with the business and product. This to me is the biggest benefit of BDD. Now you may say, well it gives non automation engineers the ability to contribute to automation, or it makes it easy to tell what the scenarios are in readable language.  My counter is I almost never see that actually happen. Instead my take is you are better off using something like Javadocs in a comment or a well structured describe it black that you can cascaded the output with if there is a need to share it. My experience is the cucumber layer typically adds complexity, obfuscation and maintenance overhead. If you are not doing the first part of a BDD approach consider not adding that additional overhead for yourself.

While there is some truth to these claims, providing product managers or developers with tools doesn’t guarantee effective testing. The QA mindset will become increasingly critical. Individual testers will cover more ground as team sizes shrink, but QA will continue to be viewed as a cost center despite efficiency gains. AI advancements like generating test cases from production logs or leveraging customer success documentation will push the boundaries of efficiency. However, this trend underscores the importance of skilled testers who can navigate the nuances of effective testing in a world increasingly dominated by automation. 2. More Bugs Introduced: AI-driven coding may increase production bugs—not because AI produces poor code but due to its potential to overwrite or misinterpret existing logic. Developers who overly rely on AI might skip critical reviews, leading to subtle errors that compound over time. AI can introduce regressions, struggle with edge cases, and misunderstand legacy implementations. Rapid iteration enabled by AI tools risks diminishing developers' holistic understanding of the codebase, increasing the chances of overlooked bugs. Future AI tools might help by flagging high-risk changes or analyzing dependencies, but until then, the growing reliance on AI will require workflows emphasizing oversight. Developers will need to pair automation with rigorous testing to maintain code quality amid these challenges. 3. Less Reliance on the DOM: AI-driven tools like Claude's Computer Use and OmniParser are steering automation away from reliance on the DOM. Traditional DOM-based interactions, such as those in Selenium, face limitations when dealing with dynamic or obfuscated elements. Computer vision allows tools to interact visually, mimicking human behavior and reducing dependency on DOM attributes. These advancements promise greater adaptability to UI changes and more realistic automation that reflects user behavior. However, this shift introduces complexities, such as challenges in debugging and fine-tuning. While AI-guided interactions offer efficiencies and benefits in areas like accessibility testing, maintaining a balance between advanced tools and foundational methods will be essential. The easiest way to understand something intangible, like Scrum, is to understand what is not. 1. Scrum is not about 14 elements [ 3 commitments, 3 accountabilities, 3 artifacts, and five events]. It is much more than that. 2. Do not create a Schema for Scrum; Scrum is about building habits. Any habits that you try to build new will have constraints. 3. Those who see constraints are rubbish rules will never build habits; those who want to build new habits trust the process 4. A process with an outcome is meaningless. An outcome without process is non-sustainable. 5. It takes skills and traits to understand 1-4. Next time, before you jump and say Scrum is a process, please give it a think. Dont let your ingrained thinking block your "SYSTEMIC thinking"! Internal orientation + external orientation of an Organization to deliver value is Scrum in my experience! tryScrum
