Cherrystone Auctions Sale - 0925

Robert S. Boyd Collection of U.S. 1851-61 Stamps & Postal History - September 9, 2025

The Robert S. Boyd Collection of U.S. 1851–61 Stamps and Postal History, with all proceeds benefiting a number of charitable organizations Mr. Boyd supported during his lifetime, will be offered at public auction in our Teaneck, NJ galleries and over the internet via CherrystoneLIVE on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. This sale of 304 lots begins with proofs, essays, postmaster provisionals, and a demonetized 1847–51 5¢ used on a hotel cover. The Toppan, Carpenter–produced 1851–61 Issue features a rare Scott 5–5A used pair, early perforation rarities including 1¢ and 3¢ “Chicago Perfs,” a trial rouletted/perforated 3¢ pair and a 3¢ used on a February 28, 1857 cover, the earliest known use of an officially perforated U.S. stamp. An exceptional section of 1¢ Plate 11 stamps, multiples, and covers—many appearing on the market for the first time in decades will conclude Session 1. The auction continues with a fine range of 1860 presidential campaign and Civil War–era postal history, a scarce 1857–61 5¢ Indian red strip of three to France, one of only two 12¢ Plate 3 imprint and plate number multiples in private hands, and an ex. Ishikawa Albany, NY to Scotland cover franked with sixteen 12¢ Plate 1 stamps. Collection and balance lots include additional special groupings of stamps and covers, highlighted by Mr. Boyd’s specialized 1¢ Plate 12 material. This is a Public Auction, with live floor and Internet bidding via CherrystoneLIVE.
