ADT’s Nest-integrated security system is one of my favorite parts of my smart home, in part because it has a lot of futuristic ideas. Recently, ADT added a new smart lock option to its lineup, and the fingerprint-enabled lock is such a welcome upgrade.

The Nest x Yale Lock was a pillar of Google’s smart home for years, and perhaps for much longer than it really should have been. Now, a successor of sorts has finally arrived in the new Yale Smart Lock with Matter, which is also the first “Google Home Preferred” product.

In partnership with Google, Yale today announced the Yale Smart Lock with Matter. This serves as a sequel to the Nest x Yale Lock from 2018, which is being discontinued.

The Nest x Yale lock first made its debut in 2018 and, five years later, it’s effectively been ignored for a while in Google’s updated smart home ecosystem. Without a proper sequel on the horizon, we’ve been looking at Yale’s new Matter-enabled smart lock which should be a good stand-in for Google’s overdue sequel, but instead, shows Matter’s limits yet again.
