Rosie O'Donnell on Depression, Relationship with Daughter Chelsea

Rosie O’Donnell is opening up about her family’s difficult time.

During a show at Gotham Comedy Club in New York City on Saturday night, the comedian, 53, discussed her issues with her daughter Chelsea, 18, as well as her own struggle with depression.

“I love all of my kids. My daughter has been in the news. It’s been in the news, but it’s not news to the family,” O’Donnell said, according to Entertainment Tonight. “It’s been a decade long. As mom, my wish is for love and peace and wait until it’s done.”

“Chelsea just turned 18. For adopted children 18 is a magic number,” O’Donnell reportedly continued. “At 18 they’re going to rebel any way they can, any way they can get your attention.”

O’Donnell’s comments are in reference to her strained relationship with Chelsea, who O’Donnell announced had gone missing from their New York home in August.

She was later found with her boyfriend, alleged heroin addict Steven Sheerer, and now lives with the 25-year-old and his family in New Jersey.

In a recent interview with the Daily Mail, Chelsea spoke out about her rocky relationship with her mother, claiming O’Donnell kicked her out of the house and firing back at claims she suffers from mental illness.

A rep for O’Donnell told PEOPLE at the time the situation with Chelsea is “heartbreaking on every level.”

According to ET, at the comedy gig on Saturday, O’Donnell maintained that Chelsea has a “chemical imbalance” and touched on her own struggles with depression.

“I know about mental illness – I have my own,” O’Donnell said, adding that it started when she was 20 and that she’s currently on antidepressants.

“I thought mental illness was failure of my character, not my chemistry,” she continued.

Of Chelsea’s decision to move out of the house, O’Donnell reportedly said: “What choice do you have but to get through? I have four other kids.”

The former The View co-host also told an audience member that she keeps mistakenly thinking she sees her daughter, ET reports: “When your kid isn’t there you see them everywhere.”

O’Donnell is also in the midst of an intense custody battle with Michelle Rounds over their 2-year-old daughter Dakota, and in September, Rounds was hospitalized after an apparent overdose.

“After the divorce, my ex-wife spoke to every media outlet,” O’Donnell reportedly said on Saturday. “Can anybody say, ‘Prenup?’ ”

O’Donnell also recently split from girlfriend Tatum O’Neal (though O’Donnell’s rep maintains the two have always been just friends), and is currently facing a lawsuit from a former The View producer.

On Saturday, O’Donnell reportedly addressed her feud with presidential hopeful Donald Trump and admitted that she “spent every day this week in therapy in the midst of the bull—.”

“What has happened with my life?” she said. “Five months ago I was a married woman and Donald Trump was a reality star. Now my world has blown up. He is the Republican frontrunner, and the zombie apocalypse is upon us.”
