The Ghost of Christmas Card Graphics Past
Here are some vintage visions of the Christmas holiday shown in 256 colors.
Since the dawn of the PC, computer users have been celebrating the Christmas holiday with colorful digital illustrations, each one a handcrafted amateur original. The same users then happily shared and traded these images on dial-up BBSes and the early www, spreading the pictures far and wide.
For the past few years, I have been collecting many of these vintage Christmas graphics files, most of which are in the 256-color limited GIF format that was so popular back in the day. In the spirit of the season, I thought I'd cull a few of the best examples from that collection for you to enjoy.
As many of these images were copies of copies passed down through the years, the circumstances surrounding their origins have, in many cases, been lost to the sands of time. If you have any clues, I'd love to hear from you in the comments area.
